Mystery Wheel Identification

Hello All,

WillWagner and I are trying to determine the origin of a set of wheels he has, and whether they’re rated for use on my wrecker.

I haven’t been able to find anything like them. They have an NSN, which is 2530-00-735-3766. They’re 20x10”, so they’re not for the regular size NDT/NDCC’s, but they’re tube type, lock ring wheels, not beadlocks.

The tiny round “hand holes” (not that you could reach through them) are really throwing me off. Has anyone seen these on something, and would they work on an M816 to run 395’s?

Thanks!
-Peter

I have one just like it kicking around here, it had a 14.00x20 NDCC on it. As far as I know they were used on artillery and maybe as a non combat wheel alternative for the m41 5 ton which came with 14.00x20 tires singled out on the rears.

Years ago I found some pictures online of an m543 wrecker in Vietnam with 14.00x20 NDCC tires on these wheels, with the rear hubs flipped. So it has been done at least once before.

Well, sure enough, there they are.

I would run with them flipped the other way on the rears, but it might just be doable. Those 14.00-20 NDCC’s aren’t available new anymore, although that would have been neat. Here they are on a howitzer:

I guess now the only questions are if I really need beadlocks, and if I can get tubes for the 395 Goodyear MV/T’s. Since my truck is a 1971 and these could be “period correct…” maybe… I might just go for it.

Thank you sir!
