ummm,if the frame is uncut that is a Long wheel base deuce.M36A2......we need the numbers off the data plate to figure out year. Can you take a photo of the plates on the passenger side and type up the numbers stamped on it?

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

Based on the mfr serial number you posted, your truck was built as a M46A2 chassis, not a cargo truck. I have darn little data on this type chassis, however, the registration number 4B9775 does not "look" right (registration numbers from this range should be from the very early 1960s - AM General didn't exist until 1971) The prefix (03) of the serial number stamped on the data plate dates for 1968-1969, and in that time frame the registration numbers SHOULD have been eight digits. And the data plate stamping doesn't "look" right either.

Info from the data plates is OK as a secondary source, much better would be the numbers embossed in the frame, probably near the driver's side shock mount.

Locate the frame number and post it, and you'll get better information. I presume the truck came through a dealer?

Best wishes,
David Doyle

Your truck (and the M35, and a host of other 6x6s) SHOULD be considered in G-742 - but since sometime in the 1960s few people have used such designations, resulting in a great deal of confusion.

Your truck is a M45A2 - and should be referred to and considered as such, especially when ordering driveline components.

Based on the frame numbers - your truck was built by Kaiser-Jeep - I suspect in 1968. Medlog MAY be able to pin this down for you. Are there any numbers stenciled on the inside of the door, or on the underside of the hood? These would help.

The ID tags riveted to the axles and transfer case are liikely date coded, as are the steel rims - these would help as well.

Best wishes,
David Doyle

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

This what the registration number brought up. There serial number doesn't bring up anything.

Organization: TOOELE ARMY DEPOT
Location: BLUE GRASS, KENTUCKY
Nomenclature:WTR PURIF EQUIP SET Model:TRK MTD NSN:4610002026925
Serial Number:1500313 Registration Number:4B9775 Year of Mfg:1961
Manufacturer:91340
Acording to the database it was rebuilt in Toole in the 1985 (your tag says 1986 and that may have been when they completed the rebuild and stamped the tag). Truck was coded out of service in Apr 1987 by Camp Robins, Arkansas Army National Guard. Now that is our tax dollars at work.

Hope that helps

Awesome guy's Thank's a mil. There is a triangle tag riveted right below the driver's seat on the steel plate that come's up from the floor, not sure what ya call it though.I don't know if that would help or not.I'll go and look under the hood and stuff.

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

the triangular tag is stamped with a MWO (Modification Work Order) number- probably saying seat belts were installed.

Boy, I'd sure like to have the complete original bed off this truck....

HOWEVER, this brings up an interesting theoritical discussion - the registration number was assigned to the complete "assembly" - a 3000 GPH ERLTOR, which was built in 1961 (which corresponds to the registration number style). As I understand this (including my experience buying one - and seeing others sold), for accountability purposes to the army this is not a "truck" it is a water purification unit - and this is reflected by its FSC.

In the instance of this vehicle - the chassis in question with certainity was NOT the one underneath the now missing bed when the bed (ERLATOR) was built, and the registration number assigned. Rather, the chassis is somewhat newer (I am still thinking 1968). The "truck" carries the ERDLATOR registration number (which makes sense for accountability) - BUT, in all probability at one time the chassis had its own registration number (since it was built as a cab and chassis, as we know from the serial number) - and when the bed and chassis were joined, the chassis registration number would have been replaced by the bed registration number, and the chassis would have "ceased to exist".

How would this be handled on the property books?

Thanks Delby for posing this question, which gave us this information - which helps us all unlock the story of these trucks.

Ever digging,
David Doyle

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

OK here's what I found. Front axle has serial # 0041167 and ( look's like a date to me ) 11 4 68 stamped on the housing.
Front rear axle has model # C240 PHX3 serial # 0018558 and 7 22 71 stamped on the housing.
Rear rear axle didn't have the tag it was missing but had 11 5 68 stamped on the housing.
So I don't know what I've got. I really appreciate all the help from you guy's. Thank's Delbert

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

The chassis was assembled in November-December 1968, or early 1969.

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

The truck lost it's identity when it had the water purification system put on it because it became a system.

I doubt we will be able to pull this from the database at this point. Only chance would be to find a different registration number that happens to show up.

OK Thank's So what do I need to do from here so that I can try to get a title for it.Could I just tell them the serial # on the frame or should I try to get a new serial # from the DMV.

RE: Need help figuring out what year my duece is.

Use the serial number on the frame. I would also replace the dash data plate and make it match the frame. It is illegal to remove or alter vin plates but I don't know if your local judge would consider this a vin plate or not. The military did it but they are kind of exempt from prosecution for it. The big point is the data plate is too easy to remove and replace. Some officers will want to see a more permanent vin and the frame number would do. A state issued vin is an option but it is a lot of hassle.

I agree with ida34, the VIN number stamped in the frame would be the way to go.

You guy's are awesome. Thank you so much for all the help ( lord know's I need it ). So for starters what year should I tell them it is.
A 1968 and I guess the make and model would be AM General M45A2. Also will i need to get another data plate to put back on it and if so where can I get one ? Once again thanks for everyone's help on this. Delbert

Since its a 68 and AM General hadn't been formed yet, I'd not list it as an AM General. The only manufacturer making deuces in 68 was Kaiser Jeep. List it as a Kaiser Jeep and you will be accurate.

I had a truck that came with a title and it had listed "1976 Kaiser Jeep". As everyone knows it would have been a AM General in 1976. The truck was acually a 1953 Reo (I think) but that's a whole another can of worms.

I've also seen several trucks advertised that listed the engine date as the truck year by people who don't know any different. I went and looked at a truck that said "1986 M35A2". When I got there it wasn't. The engine was made in '86 but the truck was much older.
