Hey guys. My name's Lorin. I'll be in the market for a Deuce in the next few weeks. I've been lurking for a couple weeks; reading & learning. You guys have some fantastic rigs! I've read through few big build threads and have been inspired. The best part? My wife wants one.:driver:

Sid, you're made in the shade, your wife is in and wants one. Get her a deuce and you get a 5 ton. Instant collection starter kit. One can be green, the other tan.
Good for you.

Welcome Lorin! I have a friend who has a 5 ton for sale in Phoenix if you decide to go that route.
Come over to Metrocenter on January 25-26 to our military vehicle show. Lots to see and a good place to get information before you buy.

Go to www.armytrucks.org for more show info. Also, Arizona Historic Military Transport Association is based in Mesa if your interested in joining a club- they're good sources of information.

Hey guys! Thanks for the warm welcome. I am really lucky- my wife is a peach. Loves hot rods, beer & good food. Luckily I can cook. Our purpose for the truck will be to do some hauling of supplies up to our "unimproved" land in northern Az. We're going to build a house up there and normal vehicles won't get up the trails under big load.

Of course, it will also spend time tooling aound the local desert, parades & off road trails, so we'll put plenty of miles on it.

I was looking through the classifieds- didn't see much for sale in Arizona... If you guys have links you can send me- feel free.

We're going for a 2.5 ton for ease of use, multi-fuel options & size. I don't know if a 5 ton would fit between the trees on our land .

Anyway- thanks again. I'll be off reading & learning!

Craigslist has lots; there was at least 6 or 7 for sale in the last couple days. Just search "military truck." Oh, and welcome from Mesa! If everything goes right, I'll be bolting the 16.00-20 XZL's onto my bobbed deuce this weekend out at Local Motors in Chandler if you want to swing by.

I just noticed - you said Local Motors?! I've always wanted to see their shop!
Yep, great guys! This Saturday is their monthly open house, and they'll have TONS of vehicles on display (including, but not limited to, all their Rally Fighters). I believe another local member might bring his HET to the event too. One of the employees there, a friend of mine, will have his Unimog there as well. They'll have burgers, soda, ice cream, etc....always a great time.

They'll have tours of their facility as well. This is a GREAT local company that has a lot going for them, both in company philosophy and product. They were kind enough to reach out to me after hearing of my deuce project and offered to host my project at their shop. I get to use their facility, tools, and have people to help me with my project from time to time. Again, can't say enough about them.

I'll likely be there early this Saturday; probably around 8AM or so.

Stationed in CA years ago and the base used to have automotive garage bays for rent (with all tools). You brought your car (or truck), paid up, and you had almost everything you needed to get anything automotive done. They also had a full-time mechanic on staff for support, and to bounce ideas off of.

I think liability killed the whole concept, but it was such a great program. It was likely one of those great big sunny California ideas that got killed by corporate oversight.

But how sweet would it be for a place (like this Local Motors in the PNW), where SS people without the big resources could work on their vehicles (individually or collectively). Anybody else on the map (CONUS/ OCONUS), got deals going on with their own neighborhood "Local Motors", like WRMorrison here in AZ?

Maybe there's a template out there to work from. It sure would be a nice set-up. Any feedback?

(I should probably make this a free-standing thread and see if it can grow any legs, and steer out of the hijack zone. And if a moderator sees this and can tell me how to do that I'll get it done).

It's a great idea I think! I (and anyone else I bring in to help) had to sign a waiver in order to work there and use their tools/equipment, but that's to be expected. And it's not just me, there's plenty of other folks who are doing the same thing there. The part of the company that's helping me is called "The Forge," and it's a little hard to describe. It's in the same building, but has dedicated employees that work there. It's an online "co-create" environment where users can submit ideas or projects that they're working on and collaborate with other enthusiasts/engineers to further their ideas. If you're local, and if they like your project/idea, they'll bring you in and they'll help!

They even work on military projects with input from their online community too; right now, they're working on several projects for the U.S. Army, and people from all over submit ideas about the projects. It's kind of hard to explain...it's best to go here, create an account, and look around!

We did that at Luke AFB a few years ago to press some ball joints.
Problem is not being active duty or reserve any more to get access to any local base. But looking for ideas.

Was it a concession on-base? Or was it a little side-work with the motor pool guys? How did you all work it out?
