What's a "new in the can" motor for a deuce worth? I've found one that is in a sealed can with turbo, starter, alternator, and clutch, built in '92. Any ideas?

Make sure it is actually new and not the motor that they took out. A friend recently bought a super clean NHC250 motor that was presented as rebuilt. He found out that the internals were trashed soon after its install so it was removed. Be careful unless you are positive it is a new motor. Are you sure the motor was not rebuilt in 1992? I thought the GOVT lost the rights to produce the MAN designed multifuel motor in the late 80s and that is what spelled the end for the M35A2. Perhaps, David Doyle can chime in as he knows much more than I do about this topic.

No way in heck I'd pay more than a core price for something because it had shiny paint.
No guarantee = only buy it like you are buying a used engine.
Just because the paint is fresh doesn't mean it isn't being sold "as-is".
We might as well get used to the fact that as the military drops these vehicles, we will have to be more like the antique car hobby; rebuilding components as opposed to replacing them with "take out" units because all these "take out" units are gonna' dry up.
When the multi dies in my truck, I am gonna pull it out, rebuild it the right way, add a preluber and good filters and not worry about it. Because I know it's right and I don't have to worry about being 500 miles from home in a 15K lb. time bomb.

CLINTO: You made a great point! I keep wondering when parts availability will dry up on things we take for granted like GMA soft tops (why would they keep making them after the trucks are out of the system), wiper motors, windshields, fresh tires (for a reasonable price), composite lights, etc.

I've been in the old car hobby (musclecars mostly) for 15+ years and the HMV hobby is really just a niche-portion of the classic car hobby and that's exactly the way it's going to go.
We will have to be more like the larger (antique car) hobby in general and rebuild components as opposed to replacing.

CLINTO: If you are correct, which I think you are, many people will leave the hobby because they don't have the money to pay someone to do these repairs/rebuilds and/or don't have the knowledge to do it themselves.

Not to argue but just because The GOVT isnt goin to be using these trucks anymore does not mean parts are just goin to vanish. They will just get more exspensive. You have to remember a lot of these trucks are goin to overseas contracts around the world and the parts will need to go to them so thats why if you want it to stay here in the good ole USA then we will have to pay more. As for the cost of motor never much more than scrap price for me. If i wanted to spend alot of money on a engine I would just rebuild it that way you know its done right!

Now is a good time to consider changing to a 5.9 Cummins or a DT466 International engine. They will bolt to your Transmission and turn more RPMs than your multifuel so you get power and speed , can't loose. JT out

With regard to spares, I used to horde everything I could find. One day, I realized that I had literally thousands and thousands of dollars of all sorts of parts...wiper motors, windshields, cab tops, cargo covers, cab frame assemblies, hoods, doors, fenders, bows, troop seats, filters, tires, brake parts, extra radiators, gauges, steering wheels...on and on. In my humble opinion, I eventually got smart about this. I no longer stock parts for my trucks. First, I have so many different series of trucks (M939, M809, M44A2, M44A3, MUTT) that doing so became cost prohibitive. When I was mainly into the M44A2 series of trucks, and owned several, it made more sense. Second, I finally realized that, rather than having thousands and thousands of dollars tied up in parts that I may or may not ever use, why not just buy what you need when you need it and pay a few dollars more at that time. For example, I'd rather pay $40 for a new deuce wiper motor when I need it than have a few hundred dollars in ten wiper motors sitting in my garage for years until the time I need one. Don't get me wrong, if I find an absolute bargain on an item, I will but it. CARNAC/MEDLOG had one of the new push button light switches for sale for $10 at Aberdeen this past year...brand new...I bought it. It works like a dream. I really did not need it, but I could not pass that price up. I only keep on hand the basic essentials and service items like filters and parts that wear. Don't get me wrong, if you saw my garage, it looks and smells like a motor pool! I have many parts, but I no longer actively seek to replenish what I use...I'll just buy it when I need it.

I am great at turning wrenches but I am light on fabrication skills and tools, so a kit that would allow me to repower a deuce without having to fabricate mounts, brackets, etc. would be great.
I suspect in the next few years, an enterprising fella could make a little money by offering ready to go, "bolt-in" kits that allow you to do just that.jatonka said:
