hey everyone ive had some military trailers finally got a driveable vehicle its a 1988 m998 hmmwv, new to the site so i guess ill just start here, i parked the truck in the garage last winter, disconnected the batteries and put them on tenders, hooked them back up a couple days ago and went to start it but when i turned the switch to start all i got was a small cloud of smoke under the hood..... lights still work but it wont crank. im a noob with this 24v military stuff can someone give me some ideas or tell me what section to look under?

Welcome from the U.K. Start by opening the hood, Examin electrical connections and solonoids. Was a componant hot or burnt when (if) you did have a look. A lot of problems can be troubleshot by a carefull look and probe, and refering to the T.M. applicable to your vehicle. Let us know how you get on solving the problem.

Welcome fellow northern Ohioan! I had a similar problem on my m35a2. For me it was loose/bad battery connections. I put new connections on, and everything was good...

Welcome. You might want to disconnect the batteries and then check the major connections. If you want someone to look at it, let me know.

Ditto on the TMs. My starter was a culprit for a couple of dead batteries. It had an internal short. The positive posts rubber insulating washer was damaged causing it to short to ground. Good luck!

Clean up all connections, I use sand paper, dab a little grease on wire ends, lugs, and terminals[ this will prevent green death]. also check you have the battery wiring in the right order, we all make mistakes.

Welcome from Texas. Agree with all the electrical advice. Review the TMs. None of us knew anything about 24v until our first military vehicle. Any chance of rodents gnawing on wires? Good luck and keep us up to date.
