Newbie fuel filter change question

I've searched and still cant seem to find a final answer... Two questions on M998
1. If I want to drain the water separator is the engine running or not? Just Crack the valve and drain till fuel is constant? I don't want to get air in it.....
2. I have no problem getting the fuel filter off and replaced..... QUESTION. Do I simply attach the fuel hose lines, turn the key to ON, and bleed till no air come out? Does the bleed come the drain valve or off the top of the filter assembly?

Sorry for the dumb question but I want to avoid leaving air inside and creating a running problem.

Howdy, I attach fuel lines, break open the bleeder screw with one of those 90 degree screwdrivers...a stubby would work too. With bleeder screw open a couple of turns I reach the ignition and turn it over till I get some decent fuel. Once I get good fuel I will hand tighten the sxrew to get it sealed quickly, then tighten it on up with screwdriver. Usually will fire right up after that.

Welcome to the site. What are you using to search? Let me be the first to say was it the TM's. OK, I said it... now your in the pack.

If truck and this hobby are new to one, pay close attention to the parts and pieces as one works on them. In this case hoses and clamps, cracks and leaks.

Starting a project... get all the odd parts first. Nothing like getting into it and find it's unique to HumV.

Replace as you go... if one suspects this could be an issue later. Cheap insurance towards reliability. Adds to personal knowledge base when on the side of the road. Best to have the TM handy or a free down load. Easy to follow more or less like the "funny book" link above.

FILTER: Another way is to take out the old ... in with the new. Parts unique to this filter housing.

Disconnect the Injection pump run solenoid wire. open bleeder screw valve and crank over engine 15 seconds, stop and wait 1 minutes and repeat cycle till fuel flows freely with good flow and pressure. Close bleeder valve, reconnect wire, cross fingers.

Nothing funny about a broken HumV, CAMO

With the engine running crack open the petcock and drain it into a glass jar so you can see when your getting clean fuel out. I ran a small hose down along the body panel so that the drain point is at the bottom of the footwell so I wouldn't run fuel down the panel and make a mess. The other thing I did was to make a small vacuum bleeder unit so that I wouldn't have to crank the engine over to refill the seperator. It can be attached to either the outlet of the filter or to the outlet of the petcock. It only took about 15 seconds to draw fuel from the tank up into the jar and then the truck started right up as it normally does.
