Howdy All,
First post here but I've been reading and enjoying y'all's stories, projects and events for a while now. I'm in the DFW area of Texas and would like to get acquainted with some of the enthusiasts in my area and any part sources near me. I had the opportunity to inspect and test drive 8 different trucks from one seller m923, m931 and a few duces. I chose a m931 tractor with 8.3 super singles ctis. It had 3 reman tags 2003 2007 and 2010 not sure where to decode/translate id numbers on them to figure out what exactly was done and when. Although i noted that several brake lines had been replaced some what recently as they didn't have paint on them and I inspected for leaks with none found and pressure reading at operational psi. I had a buddy walk beside the truck to listen for dragging or locked up brakes and all checked out ok. Let it warm up and lot drove it for quite a while and I Was very surprised at how smooth it ran and shifted! I also got to drive a few nhc 250 powered trucks and I really liked the spool up and top end pull of the 8.3 even with the slow roll off the start. It's a plus that I've had several chipped/tuned turbo diesel trucks f350 7.3, f250 6.0, f250 6.4 f250 6.7. Looking forward to starting to mod and clean and start resto. I've read through the -10 manual and read up on brake maintenance. What inspections or maintenance/fluid change do some of you do before a decent (70 miles) drive home with a "new to you" 5 ton. Could any one tell me if there is a thread covering basic tools needed for road side common failures or fixes? I'm not even sure if these are primarily standard or metric. Torx or Allen/hex head fasteners? Anyone interested in meeting me one day next week in north Fort Worth to do a walk around/ inspection before I make the drive home? I'll toss ya a good bottle of whiskey and a nice cigar! Is there anyone in north Texas with a good Goodyear at-2 16r20? I need a spare...

Good luck with truck. Remember to take it slow till you get used to driving big iron. Keep plenty of space between you and cars ahead remembering that Green Iron can flatten or crunch smaller speed bumps(cars). Read the Tech manual for the truck.

Before a big road trip from reading recovery stories you need to 1. check all fluids and seals on drive line, grease u joints of drive line 2. check fuel for crud ,drain tank a little or siphon with hose on bottom of tank to check for water, have fuel filters for replacement, 3. drive short distance and check temperature of axle hubs and brake drums for bad bearings, dragging brakes, 4 blow air line tank blow offs and make sure no massive amounts of water, 4 check belts and hoses for leaks and rot.5. check tire psi and for cuts, rot or damage.

These steps will prevent, brake fires, fuel killing engine in middle of no where or left by side of road by blown hose, bad belt or funky tire. Have fun, Mark

Thanks guys and jeepsinker your right I got to reading too many tire threads and mixed up what I have with what I want... I'm looking for a 14r20 Goodyear at-2 to be used as a spare.

Here are some photos of my new project m931A2 ? I need some input here....


Do I?
(a): top off fluids oil,tranny, diffs, brake and radiator. Then suck water off bottom of fuel tanks and add diesel clean/medic to treat fuel and system from old/stale fuel and drive 70 miles home from pick up location. It's already been driving 7 miles by my buddy's to his place near the purchase lot and all went well. I can make small repairs or maintenance there before I make the trip home 70 miles
(b): change all fluids and drain fuel tanks and replace with new fuel Before the trip home.
(C): your thoughts?



my theory is (a): let all the crud break free and clean the surfaces and loosen any build up or crud then once home change fluids and filters ect...

Your call of course, I've driven 5 of the 6 listed in my signature home, the wrecker I had towed only because I couldn't get the time off to retrieve it in the pickup window. I go with your theory, and have a couple tow operators numbers or people in route to help in case of failure.
