Advice on bidding would be don't bid unless you are ready for a possible project. The DRMO gensets are let go for a reason. It might be as simple as they were replaced with newer units or as complicated as it locked up and has sand in the oil pan. 90% of them (from my experience) have minor issues. Of the other 10%, some are obviously basket cases.
If you like to tinker or think a 4 cylinder air cooled Diesel motor is a cool thing, then you might consider bidding. You may get an 003A that only needs fuel, filters, battery, and oil. Or, you may get one that needs a new gen head. It is a gamble.
If you just want something that runs your house then you should consider buying a unit that is known to run and produce power.
You can throw down $1000 and roll the dice or maybe pay around $2500 (or more) for a sure thing. If you price new Diesel powered units that will power your whole house you'll find that $3000 is a great bargain and $1000 is akin to felony theft.
Also, military generators (except the new ones) are LOUD! Take this into consideration and listen to one before you drag one home and put it outside your bedroom window.
