Hi All

I just recovered my first M35A2 from GL. I am having trouble trying to figure out what numbers are my correct vin so I can fill out My sf-97 form. I looked on both frame rails and found some random numbers on the drivers side but I can not read them. My Data plate has the following info on it:

-Make: Kaiser jeep corp
-Fed# : 2320-077-1617
-vin # : 4H-3227
- this number had no designation : 0125-18578

Any help on deciphering my vin for the SF-97 would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ryan

Negative.

Your vin/serial number is 012518578. Your registration number (which has no direct civilian equivalent and is not necessary for titling) is 4H3227. The NSN is 2320-00-077-1617 which makes this a with winch deuce. Yours must be made before 1971 since is uses the FSC (without the 00) versus the post 1971 NSN (with the 00).

Matter of fact, here is the last info for this truck in the database:

Organization:950TH CS CO MAINTENANCE Location:LOS ALAMITOS
CALIFORNIA
Nomenclature:
TRUCK CARGO 2-1/2T Model:
M35A2 NSN:
2320000771616 Serial Number:

1966 Manufacturer:
65909 Usage Miles: 8469
Info as of Sep 04

Thanks for all the info. So I should use the serial number instead of the vin number for my registration / SF97?

Thanks,
Ryan

Greetings:

I am the proud owner of a recently purchased M46A2C (long frame deuce), with a five ton cargo bed attached and a knuckle boom crane thrown in for good measure. Here is the data plate (attached photo):

The vehicle number (VIN) is: 04J68669

There is also a unit number (I believe) in faded paint on the side: WXERAAD57001

There is also a San Juan County, NM ID riveted in the drivers side cab (pic attached).

I would be very grateful for any information you might have to pin down the history of this truck, as she will be going through a fairly thorough restoration this summer/fall. I’ll also attach a pic of the truck. Many thanks in advance, and please let me know if I can provide more info.

0322–10085 is the serial number. You should also find the same number on the frame near the drivers side between the front axle and the back hanger of the front axle.

04J-68669 is the reg number…read the first post. Contract number is for that batch of vehicles made on that contract.

WXERAA is a UIC (unit identification code). Do a google search. I found a listing but it was a long list and I couldnt do a find on my tablet.

the D numbers after could be a shipping SUN number used in the transportation movement Computer system. It’s normally just a label not paintEd.

Sir, thank you! That is exactly the information I was looking for! I had been googling the UIC, but was using the whole thing, not the extract that you indicated. So yes, it’s a simple google search now. 16th Engineer Brigade, Ohio NG.

Thank you again! 👍

Funny how it works Danspomer

It isn't how much you know.
It is who you know that knows where to get the answers!
Glad I know who to ask ;-)

Thanks for all you do for us CARNAC !

Speaking of UICs, do you know of anywhere that has a listing of them for closed bases? I'm assuming the one I'm looking up has been closed for awhile since I can't find it: WYT5Y4

In fact, the closest result I could find is on this very forum where I previously mentioned it for my August 2020 entry for vehicle of the month

I couldn’t find your particular UIC anywhere, but this might be a really good start:

Interestingly enough (at least to me), these UIC codes were seemingly developed for financial/billing purposes, and no one seems to know really when or how they were instituted. I’ll have to dig deeper.

Earlier vehicles had squadron/battalion/flight numbers on them, but later ones had the UIC. Someone correct me if I’m reading this wrong.

For a start, drop the Y4 and use AA. This goes for all army UICs. The Y4 is a Derivative UIC (DUIC). It’s a subordinate component of the main unit. Main units always end in AA. Y is probably a stay at home equipment while the unit deployed.

More complicated than that. Sign up and about year 12 you’ll start to gain the knowledge. By year 15 you think you have it. Year 20 you’ll know you’re not the smartest guy in the room on any given topic but luckily, you know who is. At year 25 they change everything and you become ignorant again. Year 30 you Retire and have relearned enough to be a consultant.

Thanks for the tip, that was really helpful! I think I know what my truck did now!

Googling WYT5AA brought me to a July 2020 US Army Corps of Engineers document that has some UICs and tells what they are. WYT5AA's unit name as of 2020 is 316 TM (MIL MAIL TERM), which is consistent with the 316 AG marked on the bumper. Unit type is MTOE. Googling 316 AG (again) shows a vetfriends search term for 316 AG CO POSTAL - FT TOTTEN, NY. Fort Totten is located in Queens.

So my M35A3 was an Army Reserve mail truck :)

Alright I'm done hijacking this thread [thumbzup]

Let me be clear: I am NOT the smartest guy in the room, nor will I ever be. I figure I’m clawing through about 1/2 of one percent of what I need to know at this point.

I appreciate your help and insight.
