No brake lights or turn signals?

I bought a Humvee today. It's a 1038, 4 seater, soft top, soft doors. Looks good, but it's not perfect - I didn't expect it to be.

Two issues - the brake light on the dash dims, but does not go off when the parking brake is released. Also, the brake lights and the turn signals don not work. Not a matter of not blinking - they don't go on at all. Any ideas on how to fix these two issues?

I'm new. Be gentle if this question has already come up... :)

I am not that familiar with the Humvee but I believe it has the standard 3 lever switch. If you have it set to Blackout mode then the brake lights and turn signals will not come on..

First congrats on getting your new ride. Second get the manuals. They have troubleshooting steps that tell you how to set up the test, conduct the test and what the results of the test tell you and how to fix it. Third....could be a couple of different things with your lights. Bad bulbs, bad ground, bad wire harnes, loos connections, bad light switch...Of course you did turn the lights on at the light switch right? You know that military trucks don't have any lights unless you turn them on. Start with turning the lights switch on and then go from there. Good luck.

Welcome to the club!!

The brake light on the dash is turned on by a switch on the brake lever. If it's bad it's most likely the source of that problem. Disconnect it and check it with an ohmmeter, any resistance at all indicates it needs replacing. You can go HMMWV sources and spend a fortune on it or you can buy a simple neutral start switch at your local parts store and connect 2 wires to it.

As DuecesWild says, check the main light switch for correct positions of the levers. If that doesn't fix the problem you probably need to replace it. It's a simple job and you can test the new one by simply disconnecting the large plug from the old one and connecting it to the new one. No grounding is necessary for the switch if it's the 3 lever type. If you have an electronic switch you definitely need a ground wire.

All the HMMWV manuals are available online. A Google search should cen them for you. You can always opt for a CD from eBay but for troubleshooting hard copy is the way to go.

Doh! SGT Paterno would be so disappointed in me right now. I'm sure it's the light switch on the dash - totally forgot about that switch.

I'll see what I can find in the manuals about the dash mounted brake light that won't go off.

Thanks for going easy on the new guy. :)

Check the electrcial connection on the proportioning valve by the Master Cylinder. Make sure it is clean and tight. That is one input on the brake warning light circut that would cause the light to illuminate.

What color did you get....Woodland camo? Sounds like you scored a nice vehicle.
Woodland - perfect for the rainy northwest. Was hoping for a turret top and either a wagon back or slant back, but this will do for now. I'm looking for a turret top, slant back, and cross doors if anyone knows any for sale... :)

I would have bought a deuce, but my warehouse garage doesn't have enough clearance!

And you live in the Northwest? Where it rains? The turret top is not what you want, trust me, they all leak like seives unless they're in the garage.

Yes, the turret tops all leak....like a faucet sometimes. But they are cool.

Nice looking HMMWV! You will really enjoy it.

BTW, those are 8 bolt wheels for bias ply tires. If you change your tires to radials, I believe you will have to change the rims to the 12 bolt type.
