Non-Collector working Deuce's

Where I am up here in Orange County, New York, we have many Deuce's that work hard in the fields every day in many capacities... Personally I love seeing the old iron still earning a living. Just interested what some other folks thoughts might be on this, and, if anyone has any working trucks in your area?

Most of these trucks are the older gasser Reo's but the Multifuels are starting to show up here and there...

I will try to document as many as I can in my area, it is sometimes a shame, when these trucks break down, even for minor stuff, they often get sent to the scrap yard, with MANY good usable parts on them...sometimes they are driven to the scrapper...

There seems to be around 100+ Deuces in the immediate area...(within 10 miles of me)

I will add pics as I get them.

The first one is three in a scrappers yard, the next three are active trucks, and the last one is mine :) not OD, but close!

I know most of these farmers and scrappers that have these trucks... Anyone interested in rescuing some parts off some of these? How many parts are interchangeable between the gassers and the Multi's? I know of at least 10 almost new beds with almost new covers and bows sitting on top of empty 55 gallon drums...

Here's a pic of a deuce earning a living with its original bed. It's a service truck for the earth moving company subcontracted in for site prep on a big construction project near where I work. There's a fuel tank with pump, lube and hydraulic oil tanks, and presumably maintenance equipment there as well.

I left its yellow coworkers in the frame just so you can see the company it keeps these days. Dig the tires...

The people at the local O'parts store and L'hardware store love to see mine. I drive it whenever I can. I even take the kids and wife to the local IceCream shop in it.

I work my primary deuce like a rented mule.......it is what they were bred for and what they live for.

An idle deuce is an unhappy deuce.

And I thought I read somewhere that the main reason that these trucks have such low hours/miles for 40+ year old rigs are because the sit mostly waiting for another one to be in the shop. I suppose that would make them rather unhappy, right?

Yes, I have a truck. If I'm not driving it, I am not a happy person.

I suppose if I had a MV, it would be mostly sitting waiting for work. I don't think I would use it for a daily driver. Maybe weekend errands, trips to the home store, stuff like that.

I'd love to visit your way. I've always wanted to see OCC and Paul Jr's place. The Deuce's would be a plus too. Jim
Give me some notice and come on up, I live about 20 minutes from OCC, and Paul Jr, and 2 to 20 minutes to the farm Deuces...

Come on up for the weekend, and you can pull parts at the scrapper if he'll allow it, and check out the sights...

BTW also only 1 hour 15 minutes to Manhattan...

I agree. And we work ours too. We haul everything from tents to mulch, and even people (just in parades)

And our 5-ton too. We haul dirt, rock, gravel, and sand on a regular basis. We put new sand on the beach (small lake) every couple of years, and this is the year.

There are a few pics of them working in my SS Photo Album, but they are just a drop in the bucket. I just don't carry a camera around with me every day.

At least y'all here care about them...most of the owners (more likely the illegals driving them) run 'em like they stole 'em, and scrap them. As I am doing more research, the Multi-fuels are not lasting due to the inexperianced migrant workers flooring them till they blow, they are used to driving the Reo gassers...

I drive mine to work (80 miles round trip), as long as I have WMO to put in the tank. Saves me about $10 a day in gas over my 30mpg car.

Once I bob my second truck and get my lockouts from Summit, I'll drive it even more and not worry about the sore shoulders at the end of the week!

I have found a handful of scrap gassers with good bodies on them...I got the gears turning in my head for a dream build, just wish I had the money...

Bobbed Crew cab with HMMWV style "slant back" enclosed cargo area
395's
LDS engine swap
Tan paint
power steering (truck style, with a possible rear steer setup for parking lots? shrug?)
Air Conditioning (plan on a move to south Florida ASAP)
snorkel kit
Dual fuel tanks
intercom system if needed
Front Pintle hitch

I plan on this as my daily driver/aircraft tug/Hurricane response & recovery vehicle...
(I am hoping it will fit in the airplane if needed in a pinch too, might be too wide and too tall with the 395's and the exhaust stack up, the gassers fit in it with a 105 trailer hooked up with the bows and covers off, but just barely...)

Yes. I don't know what the deal is with them, but it seems that most of the trucks in the onion fields that have tops, have fiberglass tops with spaces for clearance lights. They are almost always left in GelCoat white too. I guess it keeps the heat away. OR they are completely without tops. Perhaps someone here can give us some insight on who/what type of tops those are. I will try to get some better pics soon.

Out here in california I sometimes see 5 tons that have been converted to water trucks on construction sites. Many of these trucks sport fiberglass hoods and hard tops
