What is the difference between OE/HDO, OE/HDO 10 and OE/HDO 30? What commercial equivalent should I be using for OE/HDO 10?

What are you putting it in..??. You can use Diesel Rated 15-40 year round in most all Military Diesel units... Where it is extremely cold, or hot you can use a single viz... Diesel rated 10 in winter and 30 in summer... OEHD is Oil, Engine, Heavy Duty (read Diesel). The can you buy from the friendly commercial outlet will list ..."complies with Cat, Cummins, DD, etc" requirements... My personal favorite for Diesel Applications is the 15-40 Shell Rotella..easily purchased in gallons at your local WalMart...or you can get a 55 gallon drum from NAPA... ACE

My personal choice has been and is Texaco Ursa Super Plus 30W. The LDS465-2 got it and the LDT465-1 will soon have the fuel diluted oil replaced by it. Of course Ursa means Bjorn in Latin, so I'm biased. :)

I've been running Castrol Agri-Power Plus 15w40 in the Cummins 4BT's and the Multifuels for years. Meets the same slew of Cummins/Mack/Cat/Milspec/API ratings as the Rotella and others mentioned in this thread. Not only has it been a dollar a gallon less expensive at Agri-Supply, but it is supposed to have a tad more detergent and stabilizers to be more friendly to agricultural use-run hard for a week or so, then bassically shut down till next season (we've got some equipment on the farm used just like this...). Figured that it was similar to how I drove my trucks, hard for a week or so, then no activity until next month as I worked through the rotation... :)

Went into Agri-Supply in Garner las week, no longer had the Agri-Power Plus on the shelf, had the OTR Castrol 15w40 instead, at a dollar more per gallon than the Rotella... So, I got Rotella this time...

FWIW: The drum price of Rotella a Sam's Club is about the same as the Agri-Supply drum price...
FWIW2: Coworker told me this morning that she used to work for one of the oil/lubrication wholesale firms in town and chided me for buying this stuff retail since she could "set me up with her old buddies..." We shall see...

I find that asking a guy what oil to use is like talking about politics or religion and asking advice. Every one knows they are right and will tell you about it! :D I stick with a good name brand...and what's on sale at COSTCO. I usually either buy Rotella 15W40 or Mobil Delvac 15W40...both great oils. I've also purchased Valvoline 15W40 from Napa because you can buy it in 5 gallon pails.

Concured Bruce. I think the frequency of oil changes might be more important than the brand of oil.
