a harmonic balance for a M1028 that has the tachometer button (thats what it looks like) installed or a place to install mine. the "General Lee Euro Farquaad" needed a new harmonic balance so i ordered one that works fine. it just does not have a tach sensor or a place to mount the one off of my old one. i don't need it until i install the pto generator, so no rush. however, if i can find one that would be one less thing to hunt down. the one on the old harmonic balance screws on through a hole on the outer ring.

anyone have a source

Take it to a spin balance shop and have them install the old one on the new one. Should be as easy as drilling and tapping.

Just curious, is the new balancer an OEM or aftermarket?
bought it on ebay "6.2 379 GM CHEVROLET DIESEL 1982-93 HARMONIC BALANCER" from specialtyengineparts and it works great if you don't have a tach. it is on my dually M1028 with a maintance bed right now.

Take it to a spin balance shop and have them install the old one on the new one. Should be as easy as drilling and tapping.
what whould i look under to find a shop like that?

Look for a shop that does leaf springs and makes U-bolts and drive shafts. Hear in St. Pete my son and I use a shop called Pyramid. That is also a good looking truck you have there!!

Just a heads up, the PTO system does not use a pickup on the harmonic balancer. It uses a mag pickup in the PTO itself to monitor PTO shaft rotation.

I asked a machine shop that I use if there was a spin balance place anywhere near-by. They gave me the number.

i had not read to see if this was correct. when my mechanic found the wiring and the button he figured out that this was the tach sensor. none of the 6 or 7 cucv's he has ever had (M1008, M1010 and M1028's) ever had a tach. so i came up with the idea that it was for the PTO Genset, just a wild guess (or should i say wrong guess)

so can anybody give me a reason why i should spend the money to fix the tach, right now?

I can assure you the button is not for the PTO system. I have two M1031s right now, both have the PTO setup. PM me your email address and I will send you some documentation regarding the systems.

Is there a tachometer in the truck? It would be a nice addition to have a working tach, but not a requirement.

I was thinking about buying a "tinytach" and giving it a try. I still think there must be a way to use the tach reference for the STE-ICE to run an aftermarket tach. It uses a signal from the driver side ALT and runs it through a "tach buffer" to provide a signal via the diagnostic port that the STE-ICE can use to display RPMS.

My only advise for repairing it now is that the pulley is off and in your hands. Fixing it later will be more work.

If you put it together now you will be reminded of unfinished business every time you are driving and look at your gauges.

well rick that would involve planning, which i did not do. i have been driving with my new harmonic balancer for about a week now. :-( however, i don't have the generator yet so i can repair or replace then. :cookoo:
