Been looking to trade up out of my rusty bantam M416 type trailer and into something in good shape. Yesterday I came across something i had yet to see. A 416 with a top and surge brakes. I went ahead and bought it, now I got to get rid of family camp trailer ver 1.0 so I can figure out what I want to do with this one.

Are these unique or is it just me who has not seen one before?

Good find! I bet the extra hardware makes it heavy.
Looks like a purpose fabed top but it does look good.
Keeping it Military or Expo?

What does your old trailer look like?

He had more than one, all identical including the top. Anyone seen the top before? According to the seller they only made 2,000 of them with surge brake and top.
The truth is stranger than fiction but there should be some way to verify that. Just about everything Uncle buys is done to certain specs and under contract.

Oldie looked like this - https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-...aI/AAAAAAAAAdo/jNcG7c_xlYQ/s640/05071628c.jpg

I say looked because it sold 6 hours after posting it on Craigs list.

I had all intents of doing another expo trailer but drilling and cutting this thing in this condition just seems wrong. I need a flat hard top in it to mount my tent. I guess I could build a compartmentalized frame to drop down inside the tub to eliminate drilling and mounting of my camping stuff (what a pain). Maybe I will sell off the top so at least that stays unmolested and use the funds to build the new top the way I want it. Got so much to decide with this one. Hopefully someone will come along soon who is familiar with this type of lid and solve the mystery...

Got any pics of how the lid works? I have heard of aluminum tops for 416's from the military but have never seen one, so I'm not sure about yours.

After wrasslin with how I was going to integrate the 24v lights into my 12v Toyota I gave up on using the existing wiring and McGuyvered some LEDs. I had a set of magnetic stick on Harbor Freight lights I got in a rush on my way to pick this baby up. Turns out they are similar size to the mil housing already on the trailer. Added bonus is they also had all the wire and the plug necessary to complete the install.

So I busted them apart and went to trimming. Total cost $29.99 + tax + an afternoon of removing the old wiring, internals and plug assembly.

I don't think m416a1's existed yet at that time frame. The markings were probably part of the restoration, and the amber reflectors should be red as well on the sides.

That's a nice fab job. I think I've been in Texas to long. As I was opening up each pick I half expected the last pick to show the lid raised to reveal the BBQ grill.
