Looks like Hankie is out of the business until Fall. So the hazardous material charges on shipping this stuff is pretty pricey, eh? I'm starting to consider another option. We have a really good automotive paint supplier in my area, and I went over there to see if I could get a sample of the 34094 green mixed up. Sure enough, they could and they did. I believe it was a PPG brand paint (#DAR46260)and they even mixed it up in a spray paint can for me. Tried it out on the bumper of my truck, and it looks real good. However I don't know how well it will weather, time will tell that I guess. Do you guys think it would be worth trying this local option? What type of paint should it be? A non-acrylic Alkyd enamel, or something else? Thanks.

You know, I think I'll check into it. I'm going to go see what a gallon of the paint would cost me, and then compare it to the total cost of purchase and shipping the Gillespie paint. Thanks for the input.

If I recall correctly I bought 2 cases of paint from Mark and with hazmat fees, shipping, and the cost of the paint it was $225. I could be off a bit. The last time I had a gallon mixed at the auto paint store it was $90 gallon.

Wow! Kind of pricey. How many gallons come in a case? Is it two or four? How did the local paint compare to the shipped paint? If I have to go with the shipped paint, and I have to do a case, I'm wondering if they will send multiple colors of paint in the case, or if it's gotta be all one color?

Mark Dodd is Rapco. The cases consist of 4 gallons and you can mix and match. To be honest, although I've purchased paint locally, I had somebody else squirt it. The first and only paint I've squirted was the Gillespie from Rapco and as a beginner, I loved the stuff. So $225. for 8 gallons delivered really wasn't that bad. I bought 4 gallons of 383 green, 2 gallons of flat black and a gallon each of 383 brown and primer.

Well I went and priced out the paint at the auto paint store. Here's what I got:
the NATO 34094 green comes available in two paint type from PPG: an acrylic urethane, and an acrylic enamel. The urethane is a wopping $181.00/gal!! <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_jawdrop.gif" alt="Jawdrop">] The enamel is roughly $130.00 I asked about the "Alkyd enamel" since this is what Gillespie paint is selling, they said that Alkyd enamel is a "cheap" or "lower quality" paint. The urethane is the most durable, highest quality paint (thus the premium for it.) Now it seems to me, that this camo paint doesn't have to be show car finish quality, so maybe the urethane is overkill. I looked at the Aervoe brand paint recently and their paint is a "Styrene/Acrylic Modified Alkyd" paint. Rapco says of theirs: "All paints are non-acrylic enamel" and down the page further under the 383 NATO colors, it reads "made from alkyd enamel." So I'm still wondering, what is the best paint type to use: an acrylic, a Styrene/Acrylic Modified Alkyd, or an alkyd enamel? Any paint experts in here that can comment on this and give a recommendation?

The first and only paint I've squirted was the Gillespie from Rapco and as a beginner, I loved the stuff.

Kenny is 100% correct here, the Gillespie paint is VERY forgiving for the beginner to shoot. Now, with the enamel you won't have any problems with wear, but flat paints do not protect the metal from moisture. That's the reasoning behind the urethanes is that it forms a protective barrier from moisture like 95% better than the enamel can do. So if your truck is stored outdoors I recommend the urethane although that price is simply insane. I can sell the 34094 which is 383 CARC green 2 part polyurethane for $40 a gallon unfortunately UPS hazmat shipping has become a royal pain in the butt and they now require you to have a special contract with them to do Hazmat shipping so I'm looking into other options on that.

well if your not too pickey and know someone in a body shop just head down and talk them into giving you the extras, like say they paint a car green most guys save the extras but after a while there is so much they have to pay to get rid of it so my guy lets me play around till i get the color i want. thats clear coat paint though and we just skip the clear. i had to pay for a galon of it (dupont croma-clear) and it was 301.95 for millenium yellow plus 125 a gallon for the clear. it never matches quite right though and you will never match it again but on rims like i do it dosent matter if its off a little

Yes I've done the Walmart Krylon camo paint. Great price, but I hat their green. I'm really looking for the 34094 NATO green. I may consider the Krylon paint for the black and brown colors. Anyone here know how well the Walmart Krylon camo brown matches the NATO brown?

Are you selling paint? California is a lot closer to me than New England, so shipping charges aren't going to be so bad from there. What have you got in the way of these NATO 383 colors?


(BTW, anyone know why they are called "383" colors?)
