Painting Dilemma... Your Opinion Please

Gray Deuce Exterior Finished

I'm having a hard time deciding what paint scheme to go with for my deuce.

I was wanting to go with Gunship grey with black accessories but wondering how hard its going to be to find a black tarp.

These first two are the aircraft with the grey that I have in mind. I will do all the markings in black like the bobbed deuce in the 3rd picture.


This is my blank canvas.


Aside from the paint, I need to find some troop seats for it and buy a tarp. The truck came with the stakes so in the meantime ill make some side rails out of some lumber and paint them up so it doesn't look so naked.

If i decide to go traditional military I'm torn 50/50 of XM381's Tan/Black or this Green/white. These last two would make the tarp issue easy.

I really like the battleship grey and black. If you can do a digital battleship gray and black, I think it will be a work of art...

Digi cammo a deuce?? Haha thats making a lot of work into a metric TON of work! I agree that would be amazing though. I'll get the base coat ready for it so if I have an unlimited amount of time in the future, I can finish the job.

I am really digging the grey. Not as plain as all flat black, but equally as menacing.


What are your thoughts on the issue of the tarp? I was thinking they were made of canvas, which could be dyed black. I hear they are vinyl.

Yes... Our tops are vinyl. Easy to paint on also. I'm against canvas, unless your going with a garage kept historic piece. I do really like the grey also.

I've narrowed the gray down to FS36118 now I just have to find a place to buy it from. Millspeccoatings has the exact stuff but will be very pricey to ship 5 gallons (if that's even enough to do the job).

Enough...? Depends on if you want to paint the whole house or not. You can buy behr paint at home depot. That's what most of us here have been using. Its about $35 a gallon and you Will provably only need 2 gallons. I used 5 12oz. cans of Rustoleum od green to paint my M105 trailer. Just over a quart of paint with over spray. If you roll and brush it, you'll use roughly 2 gallons. We have plenty of threads here on this forum in the paint and body section that will guide you through all of your painting and body work needs. Just use the search bar and poke around...

I believe all of the current issue tarps (both bed & cab) are vinyl. Yes canvas can be dyed but dying something that large (even a cab top) would be a major undertaking. How about going to someplace like a boat shop, auto upolstery or bag shop and have a tarp made? Maybe one of the canvas dealers such as weebee webbing would be willing to do a "custom order". No matter which way you go, it isn't going to be cheap. Good luck!

You could do the old "dazzle" camo they did on battleships in WII with the gray and black or......... Berlin Brigade urban camo! I love that camo pattern!

I read this and laughed at first because man that would be so much work, but gosh would it be awesome. Then I got to thinking about how you would even undergo such a task and realized that it wouldn't actually be that hard if it were wrapped instead of painted. Companies like Color Spot do whole vehicle graphic wraps, usually for advertising. I have no clue what it would cost but I am certain that it would be awesome.

yeah I have no intention on going through with the digi-cammo, that would be a huge undertaking. I'm sure a wrap company could do it, but where is the fun in that?

I'm waiting on Rapco to email me about the FS36118 since its not on their site. If not through them, I'll order the SW Acrylic Alkyd Enamel from Sherwin Williams.

Yeah, the wrap would take the fun/work out of it. My wife still has a hard time understanding how I enjoy working on my truck. Thanks for the compliment on my build.

yeah that would be way easier, but it looks like a game of tetris

Well yeah that looks bad. I was thinking of a much finer pattern like the one below. Of course the colors could be changed to match what you want, I am just referring to the pattern.

Tower Gray

I got home for 3 days and got busy. First I had to drive to the ranch and pick up the Deuce. Had a long 4.5hr meet and greet as I drove it home, everything went well and had a great time.

As soon as the sun rose, I was cleaning and prepping for the paint job. We went with "Tower Gray" Industrial/Marine paint normally used for spraying rot-iron applications (should be pretty durable) from Sherwin Williams (2 gallons). The black was a normal flat exterior cheaper paint (1 gallon). We will see how it holds up.

It took a whole day to clean it up (de-rust/prime) and mask everything off, and only a few hours to paint that next day.

Very satisfied with how it turned out. With only 2 days to orchestrate everything, it worked out well to get the exterior finished.

As soon as I picked up the last tools from the painting, my work called and had me back on a plane that next morning. Paint didn't even cure yet, but I still drove it around to show it off. Next trip home, I plan to clean the inside up a bit and redo the seats, flip hubs and mount the 46" Michelins.
