I am one of those folks who buy and sell trucks to finance my hobby. I have to do it or I couldn't afford to attend rallys or help other folks out with cheap parts that I sell when I part a truck out. Folks that know me on this site will tell you that I am not too mercenary with my stuff. Often I will trade for what I need rather than ask for cash but that don't feed the bulldog at the end of the month.
I have doubled my money on a few trucks but I average a few hundred per unit. That is after I bid (often sight unseen), went and picked up the truck, made needed repairs on it and spent time and effort trying to sell it.
What I have accomplished is to save some trucks from the scrapper, help other members get trucks and parts and continue to engage in what can be a very expensive hobby (remember 5.00 a gallon fuel).
Another reason for the rise in prices is that the number of available trucks is getting smaller. In two years finding a deuce or 800 series truck on GL may be rare and the prices will rise accordingly.
Don't hate the player.....hate the game.

I feel ya. I was raised to be self sufficient so I haul my own trucks, do my own repairs, etc. I don't source any help so that is how I afford the hobby. Just a little frustrated, not hating on anyone in particular. I just want a 5 ton to ride around in........

I guarantee you that the dealers are bidding the absolute minimum they can get by with paying, which is the next bid higher than Joe Private schmuck in Poedunk, Genovia. They aren't going to pay twice what the next bidder is willing to pay just so they can mark it up that much higher.

Even if they do mark it up WAAAY too much, economics dictate that demand will drop off, and they adjust their prices lower accordingly. There is nothing different than a dealer bidding on a truck than you or I.

If you can't afford to win the bid, then you can't afford it it anyway. There may be just as many private parties outbidding the dealers because they don't need to profit from the purchase.

Bid what you can afford, win it if you can. There will always be someone that outbids you if you aren't willing to pay enough. There is NO conspiracy to drive the prices up.

i too want some more trucks. but i need to at least fix all the problems i have one the ones that are already here. so for me ill wait it out. i am now leaning on going for a much older truck than i can get off GL. and i hope to find a ss member selling what i am looking for. but i have plenty of time and time changes all. so next year it will be a different story with a different ending i am sure........ I'm a collector, but I buy multiple trucks like I buy multiple rifles of the same model. I'm trying out each one and will keep the ones I like, and will sell the off the ones I don't want to keep. Since I have to go through the bid/EUC/wait/recovery/SF-97/maintenance process I better darn well be able to at least make it worth my time.

I don't disagree with what he said, as yes it's a free market and people buy low and sell high. More power to them for making a profit.

I disagree with the way it was said, seems uneccessary and like kind of a tough guy stance from behind a keyboard.

I still think these trucks are cheap. What civilian vehicle will you get for $1500.00? I'll tell you, A rusty lump of crap with 300,000 miles on it and 4 mismatched bald tires. I'll keep my Deuce.
I learned a long time ago, there are alot of things that I want but that does not necessarily mean I will get them.

Someone must have been asleep at the wheel last week I got an 818 for $2600 four hours from home I believe the other one at the same base went for under $3000 too.I buy sight unseen have it hauled here and go to work on it and never refuse to buy and hoard parts buy a cheap truck and have the parts on hand to fix it is the only way to go.

..just like the guys did when the humvees were being sold way back when. They sold for what? $1000 and they ran and drove.......what are they worth now? $30,000!!!!! So bid, or wait.

When did this happen. I missed it.

And the 5 tons I found for sale on GL were all over the place. Five tons almost always sale for twice what deuces sale for, esp the 5 ton dumps. They have many more commercial applications.

The fact remains, many guys are buying to fund a business of some sort. Most can say they are helping others but, admit it, you are helping yourselves first. The first guy that can say differently ought to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. There is nothing wrong with that, but admit it. I think that was FRANKIEBOY's point. Perhaps, FRANKIEBOY can comment if I took his post incorrectly. No matter how you/we look at it, we are outbidding another guy who may also be buying as a collector, or may be buying as a dealer. When that happens, prices go up. I definitely believe there are more dealers today than when I got into the hobby in the late 90s. It seems to me as if everyone is dealing in parts or trucks. I try to stay out of it, but I have to admit that I have bought some parts over the past few years strictly for resale purposes. While I don't do this on a large scale like some guys, I am still guilty.

Well what started out as one guy's venting about a subject definately brought out the opinions on both sides of the fence. I personally see both sides of the story as legit statements (as I'm sure most people have by this point), but I'm a little suprised by some of the replys posted on here. This is a hobby for everyone to enjoy and CAM just had to blow off some steam about a particular frustration associated with it. Now you have guys from one end of the spectrum (not even owning a MV yet) to the other (dealers) putting out some posts attacking CAM. WTF guys, is this all the more mature some of us are when we get questioned online? He has a valid point and if you don't like it don't take it personal; we all involved in the same hobby here. The dealers have valid points as well; they do go thorugh all the GL hassle/fees so you don't have too. You can also inspect/drive a truck and say NO easier with a dealer than to bid online at a vehicle you have never seen or sat in.

ok,,well how about GL?? they sell trucks at a location when they arent even there! truck that sell in ok that pictures were taken of hem in IL? and some things ou buy by the pictures,,,you go to pick up and it is a completely different unit! I know for a fact that this has happened to a guy I know with his expand trailer.


so buying from a delaer, you have more of a chance to look at it, run it, etc, etc.....some of this online crap its not even what its supposed to be, and sometimes dosent even exsist!
