All new pioneer tools i've seen have been natuaral wood. From my experiance, they would get painted when the CO got a wild hair up his backside wanting everything to be painted. I've seen both ways and a mixture of both. Depended on hoe anal the unit wanted to be. I know spray painting the handles and blades were manditory after training, but cleanliness was and option in some places. i.e. shovels with dirt spray painted over lol

When we got ours, they were natural. The metal bits were just oiled, unless someone really pissed off the Transport Sgt. In which case, they got scrubbed down to bare metal, and were given several coats of the flavor of the day paint. They were kept busy for atleast 2 days!

they come into service the way the start out from the manufacturer, for as long as most guys i know remember, but that does not mean at all that there were not trucks coming out fresh with painted sets, one thing for sure in a Military as vast as ours, as soon as someome says, "thats the way its done" there is always some info otherwise...

I just spray painted some of mine with that Krylon Olive drab. The shovel was ex GI and had 4 different colors applied over the years. It began life with a red D handle. And the infamous paint over dirt :) The ax came from Forestry Service and was in Natural wood and factory gloss black head. The shovel had 1" stencil saying 2nd PLT on the handle.
