Primer

I am going to paint my 1008 next year CGI 383 next year. Some will be new panels, some will not. What type of primer is suggested?

When all surface is prep'd along with any bare metal surfaces use a 2K bare metal primer - that is your first layer of protective primer.

IF - you have imperfections in the surface @pits lay at least one coat of HIGH BUILD 2k primer on top of this. The bare metal primer does not get sanded unless you go beyond the window of getting the high build on - then it only gets lightly sanded @400 grit.

The high build you will be flat block sanding this to just about where it meets the bare metal primer - with this all your doing is leveling - then shoot your paint.

What is CGI?

I've shot real CARC and Gillespie's "fake" 383 stuff and for both I used Southern Polyurethane's black epoxy primer.

So far I have had good results with adhesion.

I wouldn't use anything but an epoxy primer. Good stuff and cheap too.

Get with CGI and see what they would use as a primer. Just make sure you use primer that is compatible with the final coat(s)...

I would concur with the epoxy primer, it's a very good corrosion fighter. Good chip resistance and provides a good base for plastic body fillers. Thanks.
