Sometimes the ones that say others don't want to do the work are really only trying to make a sale. This conversation comes up repeatedly and as a former PROGRESSIVE CLAIMS MGR I can tell you, as a company, they do not want to insure MVs for a variety of reasons. Anyone using them to insure their deuce on a personal auto policy does not have insurance no matter what an agent tells you or sells you. That goes for all the s*ithouse lawyers out there that think they know everything. Look at what your policy (yes you do need to read it) says under "Your Insured Auto" and then what the definition of "Auto" is. If there is a weight restriction it will say so in one of those places. If there is a restriction on the number of axles it will say so. If it says that but your agent told you that the policy was good, he's either lying or is just stupid.I would add that I've found it really depends on your agent. Some agents just look at it and if it will be hard and you are not a regular customer of theirs, they don't want to mess with it. If one agent tells you something different than you've read on SS, check with another in a different office. Try to find an SS member in your area and go call whichever agent handles their policies. Chances are that agent has figured out what to do with 13,000+ lb vehicles and it will be a breeze for them.
Telling a judge "my agent said I had coverage" will not keep you from hocking your house if you run over granny in her Escort. READ THE POLICY. If you are confused about the language PM me and I'll try to help. Yes each state is different but they generally have the same language and information in the same places.
Basically what I'm saying is don't trust what someone tells you. Verify for yourself that there is nothing in the language or definition of your vehicle or a specific "Exclusion" that will leave you high and dry. I love this hobby and don't want it ruined by people trying to save a buck on their insurance.
