Protect the Oak. M989A1

M989A1 has a great oak floor.
No rot, but the CARC was starting to go.

So yesterday I used an air hose with attachment to blow all the dirt and rocks from between the boards.

Today I used 9 tubes of paintable caulk to seal all the seams and screw heads.
Seemed to take forever.

Then applied first coat (1/2 gal) of Sherman Williams exterior flat paint in CARC color sand.
Im happy with the results.
Second and final coat will go on tomorrow.

The floor should last quite a while as long as I'm not hauling gravel or metal scrap.

It would cost a small fortune to replace all that wood with new oak.

Careful, all that caulk might add weight to that trailer

Looks good, what do you use yours for ?
Mine is really good at killing grass where it's parked !

Yes, they are heavy! Another 10 pounds won't hurt.

I bought it to resale.
Everyone wants it but they don't want to pay for it.
No takers so I'm keeping it. That's the reason for saving the floor.

I will haul hay with it for now.

Also thinking about getting a S280 shelter and rigging up trailer for rough camping.
That's most likely what I will end up doing.

Yeah the weight comment was an attempt at sarcasm.
I have one, that is currently "yard art".
There is nothing light about these trailers.

I knew what you meant!

Even offered it to the local VFD for free. Recommended install of one big or two small water tanks.
They have a water truck (exMilitary) that can handle it.
They kinda were like "well we would have to drain it in the winter time".
So much for trying to help my community.

I know another guy in OKC that uses his for trash.
When its full he hooks up and empties it somewhere.

If all else fails.
Throw some seats in and have a unique hay ride

FD generally don't like trailers. Particularly big ones. Need things that don't take time - hitching up, backing etc. Can get most and DOD equipment for free anyhow. Any water on vehicles is not scored for ISO fire rating unless available 24/365 (heated indoors)

At least a pickup rear-ending your hay ride isn't going to end badly for the riders. The pickup will have a bad day.

This is what I used.
Stuff is like concrete when it's fully dried.

I used Sherman Williams because at every Home Depot store, the paint guys were Idiots.
Even when showing them a picture with codes and a label and telling them step by step how to find it, they just couldn't grasp it.

SW guys had it mixed and ready in under 10 minutes.
Total in store time was about 14 minutes. Yes. That fast.

One gallon did two good coats with plenty left for touch ups.
Used roller on all of it.

Great job of sealing and painting.

Those seem like such great trailers as a concept. The weight is a killer but goes with the strength needed to haul pallets of ammo I suppose. I would think a quarry could use one for hauling big blocks of rock. Adding a K-boom would make it a killer app. delivering Gennies, granite counter tops, jersey barriers?? I bet you could put a sheet of pond liner in it, fill it with water. then get a field, submersible, water heater and have one heck of a mobil hot tub!

If the side panels could actually hold back some weight I would use it to haul gravel.
Adding a side dump bucket with hydraulics would make a heavy trailer even more so.
The truck hitch can handle only so much.

Its funny you mentioned the water because I had already thought of a pool, but the side panels would just bend out.

The self leveling feature is very cool.
Was parked, truck running, on a decent slope and that feature kept the floor level.
Still amazes me just how well they are built.

At least I don't have to worry about the floor for a while.
