Hi SS,

I'm new to this site. Found a 1978 M246A1 for sale, not sure how much I should spend. It runs very well, has rebuilt trans & transfer case (recently) has 11,000 miles 454 hrs. sounds like low miles & hrs. to me. 20,000 lb front wench, inoperable at this time poss bad sheared pin. Is listed on the data plates 1/78, M246A1 Truck/Tractor/Wrecker 5ton. Everything else seems to work well but is missing 5th wheel setup. Tires and tread depth seem ok, was told brakes need some work though. I have Army service number & vehicle number from data plates on dash. Are there any websites to go to to get a full history on vehicle? Not sure if they have title yet.

Any advice, direction would be appreciated.

Sounds very interesting. Do you have pics or do they have an asking price? Carnac may be able to help with VIN data. He has an ongoing thread dealing with Army VIN data. Welcome to Steel Soldiers neighbor!

it comes with a wench on the front? That sounds like a deal to me. Whenever you get bored she can entertain you. :-D

Haha! that's what I get for dictating that to my girlfriend because she types faster than I do.

I've been looking for info on the M246A1 engines and I'm not coming up with the types of engines that came in it for a '78 model. I was told it may be a Mack engine, can it be a multi-fuel also? Do you think this is a rare find? I haven't been able to find any prices on these things so I have no idea what to offer, but the seller appears to be motivated.

If it is truly an A1, it is a Mack (i.e., not a multifuel motor). However, I suppose an A1 could have been re-powered with a multifuel. Has anyone seen a Mack truck repowered with a multifuel motor? I have not...

How could it be a Mack if it was built in 1978?, A1's were built before A2's. A2's use a multifuel. After that didn't they change to 800 series and the tractor wrecker is called out as 819. So, I guess the answer is it's not a 1978. Wish I had a 5 ton A1 with a Mack. JT out

The listed year of manufacture means nothing to me. I bet it was rebuilt in 1978. Joe Young once had a "1975" M54A1C. There was a huge data plate on the dash saying that truck had been overhauled in 1975, yet the SF97 came out with a build year of 1975.
