I jumped the gun a bit and was not aware how large the HMMWV alternator is. I ordered one and it came in today. It's a monster! There is no way i can install it on the M923 with the NHC250 without some modifications. There are engine cooling components that are in the way. I need some help from the technically savvy members in order to get this mod accomplished. The main job will be to move and reroute the cooling system components that are in the way of the new alternator. I may also have to fabricate some brackets to support the monster.

I will add pictures tomorrow if weather permitting. In the meantime let's see what you guys can come up with.

You know it is heavy when there is a lifting eye on it.
Yes I picked it up by hand to remove it from the plastic carrier they shipped it in. Cannot do that in the install phase! Now who is gonna come up with the solution? (Might have to borrow some cooling system parts from the M818 version of the engine)

I will when I get to my shop tomorrow, I both a 800 series truck and a 900, I will explore both possibilities and take pictures.....
Any ideas are welcome at this point. I will post some closeup pictures of the alternator tomorrow. I don't think the mounting is going to be as much of an issue as the space required.

BTW the newest part on the Alternator is dated April of 2010 -so it is not that old of a unit.

They were used in HMMWV's that were Radio Vehicles, I have a couple of these alternators, but they are damaged, buying a new one is a much better idea at this point. I have a 3500 watt Xantrex Inverter in my 813 for camping and I run a Vanner Equalizer to balance my 24 volt batteries and pull a 12 volt tap to charge my other 2 batteries. I have always liked the idea of separating the systems, so one doesn't kill the other.

I assume you did not install them on the NHC250 yet. So we are both hoping they will fit somehow?

Well I checked out both trucks and have arrived at a solution, it is gonna take a bit of fabrication. The first two pictures are of the 900 series engine and the last three are of my 800 engine. Basically it is gonna take making an extension for the coolant filter reservoir between the end cap and the tubular housing. I am going to try to get both parts so I can see how the filter is held in place and fab one up, it isn't too awfully difficult to make two. It will move the end cap out 4 inches which is the max your set up will allow, there is more room to be gained by using slightly shorter belts to move the new unit in closer to the block. Not exactly a bolt on, but not impossible either......

You can also move the red hose seen in pictures 1 and 2 by switching the hoses that come out of the transmission oil cooler.

Just to throw this out there. I think that is a one way pulley on the alternator. So you have to have to have it turning the proper direction. Also you will need a serpentine belt instead of the v belt system. I also remembering hearing the reason they put the one way pulley on there was to protect the alternator in case the engine turned backward or else the regulator gets burned up.

I am not 100% certain on the above.

As long as the HMMWV engine turns the same direction as the NHC250 we should be OK with the turning direction! As far as the pulley, they are removable and replaceable with a 2 V-belt pulley. Any good alternator shop will be able to swap them out.
