Engine died while idling. 24 volts going to and out of fuse for fuel pump. Wacked on pump outlet housing and fuel pump stated making noises that were bad.. Can these pumps be removed and cleaned to be made reliable again or just replace it. Where are you all getting new ones or do I take a chance on a used on??

I f your truck does not run without the intank pump running, that means that the supply pump on the side of the IP isnt working either!
That or your fuel filters are completely plugged shut, But the truck should run without the intank pump working. If the the supply pump is working it will pick up the fuel on a primed system.

I let the fuel level get low. i wonder if the pump could have got warm?? Would think the government would have figured the tanks would be run low and thought about the pump pump also.

The outlet housing i the top of the pump cover has a small pipe plug oposite of the fuel line fitting. When I removed this plug nothing came out. When the pump was trying to turn and making noises nothing was spraying out of it either. If the pump was working tons of fuel should have been squirting out of the plug hole, correct??
Saturn has pumps for $200.00 Anybody have anything good or bad about ordering one from them??

I think the pumps that saturn have ,are the supply pumps on the IP

They have two fuel pumps listed. One as fuel pump and the other as a assembly. The fuel pump is shown to be sold out and the assembly shows to be $200.00. They didn't have a intank pump listed just fuel pump. Lets hope. Any other sugestions out there????????????

Try these guys, they are the manufacturer that supplys the military. They have brand new pumps not NOS ones for $225 if I remember correctly. Olympic Controls Corp

As to pulling the pump and messing with it I had one that was making a terrible racket when it was running. The bottom / pump housing is connected to the electric motor by either 3 screws or rivits depending on how old it is. The pump I had had the screws holding it together, and one of the screws came out allowing the pump housing to get out of alignment with the motor and made the impeller shaft hit the sides of the housing when it was running.
I aligned the 2 halves and bolted it together. Works fine now

Will tuesday. it's parked behind a fence at a building company. I'm going to pull it this weekend and check it. May get new one just for insurance sake.

I purchased my in tank pump from Olympic Controls for $225. I found out the hard way that the original pump was bad when I couldn't reprime the fuel system after replacing the fuel filters. My truck only had 276 hours on the clock FYI, but the pump was most likely 18 years old. That's the last time the truck was rebuilt.

Edit: It's nearly impossible to rebuild the pump yourself. If you pull it out of the tank, you'll notice it is riveted together and installed as one part.

This is basically the same scenario I went through with my M109. When I picked it up at Ft.Riley, it started EASILY. I ran it out of fuel and had a hard time getting it started again and ever after that it didn’t start as easily. This past winter in very cold weather I went to charge up the batteries and couldn’t get it to start at all. Long story short, my intank pump has probably never worked, I was running of the IP. When I got air into the lines problems started.

Has anybody had any luck with removing and cleaning one up??

I cut open the in-tank pump and found a neat centrifugal pump with bad brushes and a bad armature; unrepairable. Even if I could fix the motor, I had to grind off a flange to get to the motor and I am not sure that I could seal it back up. Diesel in a DC electric motor would be BAD!

If doing what crazyplowboy did doesn’t fix it I also recommend Olympic Controls Corp. (probably over $200). I would not recommend spending more than $35 on a pull-out because a DC motor can sound good and work well right up until it throws a brush. I am going to put an inline pump from Carter (About $70) for the short term and then an Olympic pump in the tank when funds get a little freer.

why wouldn't you just put an aftermarket inline fuel pump in there? much cheaper and extremely reliable. plus, a whole lot easier to troubleshoot and R/R if required.

also, i thought OD Iron had an inline pump kit?

Finally a drop in solution to replacing defective in tank pumps on LDT and LDS trucks. Simple installation, no hose, clamps, etc simply cut approximately 6.5" from the existing fuel line and install the inline pump in its place using the stock pumps wiring for power. Pump specs... .750 GPM (45GPH) self priming, 24 volts, adapted to 1/2 inch self aligning fittings to fit the fuel line

Recieved my new pump yesterday from Olympic control and installed it. Took about 5 seconds of cranking and it fired right up. The guy Dave at Olympic was great. Would really recondmend these guys if anybody need a pump.

Yeah, Dave is awesome! He helped me with my pump. I couldn't find a code on it and emailed him some pictures. He easily identified the correct model for me.

Thats what I had to do also. I didn't want to install a aftermarket pump due to it looks wrong. My truck only has 782 hours on it so I wanted it to look OEM. Dave said this pump should last appox. 4000 hours so hopefully it will be the last one ever installed.

I posted earlier in this thread that if the truck wont run without the intank pump working , That means the supply pump on the injection pump isnt working either!

I woudnt rely on just the intank pump to get me where i was going :roll:
