I'm very interested in picking up a 5 ton truck, without trying to break the big rule in yellow at the top of the screen, I've seen a lot of M923A2s on the GL site selling near me. Obviously I wouldn't buy or even bid before going to look at them but I have some reservations. Have your trucks been in the same condition as when you went a previewed them at the time of purchase? I've heard stories of people having their trucks damaged or pieces stolen from the trucks while they sat waiting on the EUC paperwork to return.

Also could someone elaborate on the EUC process. I'm retired Navy and a current civil servant with several security clearances, are you saying that after I win the auction and pay for the truck I have to let it sit for up to two months before I can get it? What happens to it in the meantime? Do they take any liability if something happens to it during that time?

On another note, are there any members reading this that may be from VA? I'm curious as to what you did to register the truck, and if you indeed have a Class B CDL to drive it.

That sounds about right on par for our government, "no sir you can't have the truck you paid in full for just yet, you must wait for another one of our painfully slow processes to complete before we can release it to you, oh an should anything happen to it while awaiting our painfully slow process to complete it's 100% your fault."

I guess that 's the price of admission though.

Some have reported reimbursement from items missing, but many have been told to go pound sand. Personally, I would call the local police and fill out a theft report.

The M923A2's don't have a EUC , you pay your money and got 10 days from the date of your paid in full invoice to get your truck. Pick-up appointments are set by them not you ussually.

Good thing is most of the 939's don't need an EUC so you can get your truck within a week of auction ending. Mine have been in the same condition as preview but not the same as pictured.

When you preview pick a primary and back up truck and take lots of pics especially if there are items in the tool boxes or stored in the cab or bed. The most common items that are "liberated" are turn signal arms, mirrors and Basic Issue Items. If you win the truck and items are missing you will have a better chance of getting the issue resolved. Security is pretty good at most GL sites. Most places now escort you the whole time you are there (I know they do at Redstone).

Thanks for the information guys. I'm glad to hear it's not quite as bad as some people make it sound. I'll be sure to bring a camera for proper documentation if allowed by the base personel. There are a group coming up for auction at the end of the month, I'll be headed out there to preview them next week.

Iggy, FWIW, and speaking only for my own experiences, I was in the same boat as you (1st purchase was a 5-ton M817) and my GL experience was great. Truck was far better than the pictures showed (preview, preview, preview!!), EUC turn around in exactly 7 days and all the goodies stayed with the truck just fine (full tank of diesel fuel, axe, MRE in the map compartment, hardcopy operator manual, jack and wheel tools, etc, etc). Everybody's experience is unique -- just saying that it's possible to have a good one. As Ronald Reagan said, "Trust but verify."

About two yrs ago I had to wait months to pick up a deuce I won but won a M923a2 end of June and picked it up in NV a week and a half later. I studied pics and videos of several trucks at two different sites, then made up my own hand written spreadsheet kind of thing of the ones I was interested in and lucked out. My truck was 800 miles away. when picked up, the tool boxes were locked and full of all the BII in sealed boxes and envelopes. The 1990 truck was depot rebuilt in 2008. Only 12000 miles on it, excellent truck.010.jpg

When you say "liberated" are you then implying that other GL buyers are snatching items off other people's trucks that they need. Or that the GL does it?

Not just GL buyers, but some parts may be scrounged by base personnel to keep their trucks running, especially if the trucks are stored at the repair facility. It just depends on how the vehicles are secured and who has access to them. It is also not a common occurrence.

If the truck has been badly damaged, you can refuse to pick it up and demand a full refund. If you find the damage or missing parts after you pick it up, tough luck. If it only has slight damage or missing items that were shown in the auction photos, you can have the GL rep document it on your copy of the invoice and petition GL for some compensation (that's what I did, but it was long and burdensome - in my case I had to provide bills of sale for replacement parts).

Iggy, I'm down the road from you in Portsmouth and have a 923 if you want to come by to have a look. If you've never been around one before, it might give you a leg up on what to look for.

With a 900 series, for private use, in the state of VA, you DO NOT need a CDL. I can't speak for all states, but in VA at least, a vehicle for private use (regardless of weight or airbrakes) a CDL is not required.

Not mentioned, but private owner sellers might be another route. With a private seller or dealer you can usually test drive the vehicle and if it is up to your expectations buy it and drive it home the same day depending on what state your in for a temporary tag. Buy from liquidatin it might start, it might have brakes it might have a lot of MIGHT HAVES that can be costly.
