Rebuilding MY m101a2 BY harleyhouse

Yep, not bad. Paid 650 out the door..or off the lot. I can get $400 for the wheels if I were to sell them. I won't though cause they are a match to the one on my K5 Blazer. Tires are like new

Paint and a new box to make a Chuck box . Scraped primed and painted four coats of Gloss black oil base paint. Sprayed very mice with my $11.99 HS HVLP gun.

I bought an aluminum work box off craigslist that will work great as a Chuck box and house my camping kitchen. 47" wide 16" deep and 18" tall. It will work well.

Once the paint cures I can mount the wheels and start wireing.

little off topic, but I see you painted it with a HF gun, what do you use for an air dryer when using the gun? I am trying to decide between an airless or my compressor for painting my M1008

No dryer or water filter, I used a small compresser and it kept up fine, The temp was high outside, but the paint dried fast. The metal of the frame and tub was warm to the touch, this helped with drying any condensation.

If I did feel water build I would just bleed off the gun and it was fine.

Started to fab the rack for the roof top tent.
1 x 2 tubing and flat plates to bolt it to the tub.
I still need to make corner braces and end caps.

I had some diamond plate left over so I covered the opening in the tongue with it.
found a cool handle made of stainless at a sale so I mounted it to help with hitching the trailer.

The rack turned out great, The corner gussets worked well and stiffened the side to side movement. Painted black and I bought a set of 1 x 2 plastic plugs to fill in the open ends of the tubes. I plan on adding a Roof Top Tent soon if money permits.

The rack works well for kayaks too.

I painted the tub of the trailer to match my truck.
I had paint mixed at work to paint the tub so I used a Harbor Freight HVLP $12.99 spray gun.

I mixed the paint, catalyst, reducer and activator and away I went.
I shot 6 pots and 5 coats of Mathews HOT ROD RED to cover the original camo paint scheme.

The paint set up good and covered well.
My first big spray project. It is RED and you can't miss it!

I took off the tie down loops, tailgate pins and tub bolts to work and sand blasted them to like new condition. A quick shot of paint and they look great.

I made a set of tailgate cables instead of the chains.
They will be easier on the paint.
Every trailer needs a bottle opener too!

Yeah I know. Thread won't die. Two questions. How long are the cables for the tailgate and does the length allow the tailgate to lay flat, instead of stopping at 25 degree angle?

1/16" cable 24" including the thimble loops.
They are there to keep the tailgate pins from walking off.
The cables do not swing around and chip the red paint.

I drop the tailgate down when open.
I always like to hear what people think of my RED trailer.

Oh, I was hoping to do the same thing, but because some things are longer than the bed, I wanted the tailgate to lay flat.

I have two pieces of 5/16" chains that have lift load snap hooks
they are long enough to allow the tailgate to lay flat when open.
I keep them in the tongue box.

How did you prep the camo paint before shooting it with the red? Mine still has the rustproofing on it and unless you remove it all, paint seems not to stick well--alligators really bad. Did you have to take it down to bare metal?

That gas Griswold grill is SUPER! Where did you find it?

The RED paint has held up well for the past year.
I sanded the tub lightly scraped any loose or peeling paint.
Primed any bare areas then sprayed the RED on a nice hot day.
The paint flash dried very fast and after several coats looked good.

The Griswold stove came from a garage clean out.
Free just for hauling trash. It has worked well and has made many a fine dinners.

The trailer has logged many miles behind the famly truck and has been a great hauler.
I would like to find a good deal on an 1101 or 1102 and paint it RED.

A 101A2 for Christmas: Our 2011 parade float entry.

Our town has a light up night at Christmas.
They have a night parade and the local businesses have specials
and stay open late.

The Oakmont, Pa. Chamber of Commerce has a float contest.
Anyone can enter , Churches, schools, scouts, and families.
So this year the HARLEY family entered a float.

My two girls chose A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS as the theme.
Many nights of cutting out plywood characters, building a deck for the trailer, Painting and assembly is now complete.

We used our 1990 M101A2 for the build and it worked out great.
For lights I used a Honda generator mounted in place of my tongue box.

Top prize is $200.00 dollars, but I enforced to my girls that we are doing the
float as a family project and although it would be nice to win we are showcasing our talented family.

I will post pictures of our 2012 float entry next week. This saturday is the parade for the 2012 Light up night.​
