Replacement Fuel Tank

I am wanting to install the auxiliary fuel tank on the passenger side, and after removing the bed from my M1028, I discovered that the original tank on the drivers side is in pretty bad shape. So I have decided to buy 2 new tanks and replace the original at the same time I install the auxiliary tank.

Question - is there any alternative to buying a replacement steel tank from Summit, JEGS, etc? I believe these steel tanks may be Chinese or other import, which doesn't sit well with me. Is there an American source for a higher quality tank? Has anyone had any experience with the polyethylene tanks from Gas Tank Depot? https://www.gastankdepot.com/2050a-plastic-fuel-gas-tank-chevy-gmc-pickup.html .

I am also going to need the brackets, straps, cushioning, etc. I will appreciate nudging me in the right direction.

Look around down there in junk yards, I know a guy up here that sells used gas tanks that he buys from down south. His business name is The Tank Bank so used is available. Other than that SPECTRA I believe is made in Canada.

I looked into doing this, decided instead to add a 108 gal in the back, that said, Advance Auto found me the tanks (plastic) and straps I needed if I was going to do the job and the price was right.

I bought my tanks and senders from Advance Auto, the senders a Spectra and I think Dorman makes the tanks. The tanks were coated inside and out and seemed as good a quality as I took out. You can use a 25% off code (RMNAAP25) and get them for $75 each shipped.

I'd go for the plastic tank. No more worries about it rusting. I purchased the 31 gal gas tank from Gas Tank Depot. Have not used it yet, but feels and looks decent.

A lot of the tanks are galvanized so I would not worry about them rusting. Plus if your tank made it this far you would not theoretically have to deal with it for another three decades. I think going plastic over steel is a moot point.

Yeah I’m leaning towards the MTS plastic tank from Gas Tank Depot. It’s actually polyethylene, a stronger cross-linked high density polymer. And they are Made In The USA. I think I’ll order 2 of ‘em tomorrow and order the brackets and straps for the passenger side from LMC. I’ll document all this in my rebuild thread.

But having said that, I might change my mind tomorrow. I’ll sleep on it and see how I feel tomorrow.

Mike I have the tank saddles from original CUCV trucks. They are OEM and will need blasted and painted but in excellent over all condition. You can buy a strap set and make these as good as new. Let me know. I can box them up with the M1009 fuel cup. Isn't the tank I sold you up to the projects level of perfection? HA HA. Let me know I have them here. Good Luck.

I plan to use the brackets off your tank and will blast & paint them. The tank is just so rusty, it will be easier for me to simply buy a new tank rather than spend the time in sanding and reconditioning your tank. At thus stage in my life I have more money than time. My next surgery is next month so I am looking for ways to speed the project up. I will buy new straps and pads from LMC or one of the other suppliers. I will, however, need a rock shield, so if you have an extra for sale I will purchase it. Let me know.
I am intrigued and interested in the new polyethylene tanks. Already black, never need painting, never rust. Seems like the way to go. My original drivers side tank is also rusty so I plan to change that one too.
My whole M1028 project is now in its 11th year. Been sorta shut down over the past year or so waiting on these next surgeries. I was prepping for surgery in 2019 but then had my second heart attack. Got over that and off blood thinners in early 2020 but then COVID hit. I am now prepping for surgery in late May.
Working on my truck and making it perfect is the only dream I have left. Thank you for all the help you have provided.
If you have the tank rock shield, please let me know. I can blast and paint it here.

I always painted new tanks, they generally outlasted most of the vehicles they were installed in! I've gotten picky in my old age..... Won't spend a half a day cleaning a used tank when a new one is that reasonable! (Providing it's a similar quality part) Sceptra also makes the straps ST01

Years ago I purchased new steel tanks for the 74 K10 from Year One. Never had an issue with them. The gentleman that I recently sold that truck to cleaned out the tanks and there was zero rust.

I have Zero of the M 1008 truck skid plates. I have several M1009 fuel tank skid plates. I would help if I could. Thank you.

I just now ordered 2 of the Spectra steel tanks, 2 sets of Spectra straps, and 2 sets of pads from Kentucky Speed Shop. All I need now is a tank skid plate and I will probably reach out to John at Hillbilly for that.

You must be asking about the tank, not the skid plate. Both are steel.
