The auto-tune antenna turns freely and does turn with frequency range changes on the RT-524.

The fan comes on in the Transmit mode.

There are a couple of good antennas that can be used with the RT-524s. The early AT-912 antennas (rectangular shape MX-2799 base) were introduced with the radios in the mid-60s. They were replaced with the AS-1729 (round MX-6707 base) to cut costs. Later on the AS-3900 antennas were introduced with the Sincgars series of radios but will work equally well with the RT-246/524s.

Cool setup, Was wondering what you were using for a mike and have you tried just swapping the mike and related cables with a radio that works well. 1.5 watts should get you a mile or more in most conditions. 30 watts should get you 10 miles under very bad conditions. A bad mike and or cables can lower your audio and make it seem like you aren't transmitting even when you are putting out 30 watts.
