My S-280 Shelter that I recently won has everything-----except the door peephole.
Must have souvenir for someone.

Since this part is probably impossible to find.
Need ideas as what to use.

Hole is too big for a regular house front door type.
Could make a plate for each end I guess.

Would like something more Military looking.
Original type would be best.

Ideas?

Look up and search TM for the shelter an search in the peep hole NSN or part number on auction sites or qooqle.

Try the manufacturer of the s-280 Gichner.

Since its a shelter it didn't dawn on me to think about a TM.
Will do that.

The manufacturers will not talk to me.
In their minds all parts are classified.
They think they are building a nuclear sub or something.

They have a TM for everything, even tent GP small :)
Got a pic? Of the void, as you are looking for the part?
I am guessing it is in the door.
I have a 250g for the back of the GOAT, and the closest thing I have to a peep hole is the emergency exit panel.

With the TM you need to find a -34p version, I think they are the parts assembly for the repair & maintenance folks.
Although the one you listed was quite detailed in the assembly of the door.

Lots of cool shelter stuff to quickly become distracted by when I visit the ol' qooqle.

What about this http://www.liberatedmanuals.com/TM-11-5410-213-14P.pdf (Nope that one doesn't have it)

This page lists a lot of s-280 related manuals to look for and thumb thru. http://tentsshelters.tpub.com/TM-11-5410-213-14P/

So far nothing found

Hole is at least 1" maybe 1 1/4"
Small rubber flap on inside of door to prevent someone seeing in, is still there.

Shes rough, but still sturdy

Maybe an opportunity to mount a fisheye backup camera for the drivers compartment, and have an extra monitor for inside the box

Just want the original design.

Anyone have a pic of theirs?
Any number on it?

I have a mangled door that may have one in it.

Never tried to remove one.

If the snow lets up a bit, I'll look at what I have tomorrow.

I've been in a lot of Army comms shelters and I don't ever recall a peephole. What system was mounted in the shelter or what was its original purpose?

Not sure of original purpose.
Almost every data plate has been painted over.
Haven't tried to save them yet.

Its clearly a factory peephole.
Wasn't an afterthought.
Small rubber flap on inside of door, to cover peephole, is still there.
You can tell it was done at factory.
Door looks factory original also.

Mine is in an S-250 shelter(iirc).

They also had some funky copper radiator like filter in the door vent.

Bad news is, we got about a foot of snow so I will not be looking first thing this am. If I can find the door under the snow, I'll look later on. Sorry.

Here's what I found. My shelter was a S-318.

It was mounted in the inner door door(escape hatch). The hole was only about 1/2"-5/8" diameter.

It used 3 threaded inserts to hold outside plate and the inside had 3 rivets holding the outside escutcheon on.

It was a bit rusty and far from perfect but it will fill your hole. It's not perfectly clear to see through(maybe rust stained glass).

If you'd like it, PM me an address and I'll get it out in the mail some day this week.

A lot of shelters do/did have the peep hole. A surprising number of the scrap ones I've seen had it removed, so maybe it's hard to get through the military supply system and the troops pull them to put on their newer shelters?
The rubber flap is more for light discipline - to keep light from shining from inside out - than for privacy. ;)

Cheers

That makes sense about the flap blocking light.
Didn't even think about that.

I never found a part number or manufacturer on the part.

It's funny after years of owning or being in and out of a number many different types of Uncle's shelters I've just never noticed any peepholes. Not saying they weren't there, I just never noticed or heard any remarks about them.

I never noticed them either.
Wouldn't have thought twice about it if it was still there.
Sure notice it now that it's gone.

Surprising how difficult, so far impossible, it is to find just a part number.

Hopefully Dogheads spare will work. Looks like it will fit just fine.
