One alternative I thought about, which maybe is what other people meant, or maybe is just impossible and I'm mis-remembering my electricity 101... couldn't you also draw 12v from all four batteries in parallel and use diodes to prevent this 12v circuit from allowing the batteries to discharge/avoid the 24v series connections.
