Martin, a bit off topic, but the Scorpion has track pads as do all the CVRT's correct? Have you ever just driven it on the street, or would LEO hassle you? I was thinking about tracked armor, like a Saurer 4K or Stormer (also CVRT), but seems like you can really only use them off road, and for me that defeats the point... taking kids out for ice cream in one of these or maybe cruising into Dunkin Donuts once a month is my intended use, so if I can't do that, I wonder why even get it. I only have 3 acres at my house, not enough to really hit the mud and seems like strapping this on a trailer and hauling it 50 miles to a dedicated site is a huge hassle. Wondering what you use yours for... and your experience.
As you say, it has rubber track pad BUT they are molded into the track and cannot be replaced. Once worn down you are on the grousers. My leading edges are down to the metal, the pads are wedge shaped, thin end to the front. I have 3 spare sets of track but will probably try for another year on the current set. Only real problem is sharp turns are now leaving a mark.
I drive mine in parades on the street which is fully sanctioned as the roads are typically closed to all but the parade. Its often the case that at the end of the parade its a drive through town back to the trailer. Never been hassled BUT I have insurance and a liability umbrella and in MA you cannot register a fully tracked vehicle, many states you can, just not mine. Funnily enough a half-track seems to be fine, go figure.
I did drive it to breakfast one morning real early, pissed off the neighbors, woke em all up on a Sunday morning!
Lost a trailer tire in town and unloaded and drove back home in rush hour - someone called to LEO's, they offered an escort but I was already home. Brightened up the commute for the masses.
Ah the Scammel \ Foden DROPS. I did look at buying one. Problem was to find one that's 25 years old, that then makes it EPA exempt and easy to import outside of that all bets are off.
A great vehicle though.
Martin.
