Kenny, Your project sounds like a good idea. In my opinion, if you aren't restoring it for posterity and it's not earning it's keep, dump it! I'm sure insurance costs are also contributing to your decision (in addition to maintaining the thing. My bad back was part of the reason for the selling the duece that I had. I hated to see it go, but I'd rather enjoy full range of motion as long as possible. Just my 2 cents. I've always thought a set up like cranetruck's was the best and most useful.

So you are itching for something new and exciting. :)
Mounting the crane is not really difficult, but I wouldn't recommend a heavy model like Joel's, which would require a shorter bed and reinforcement of the frame.
My truck weighs about 1500 lbs more than Bjorn's (I think) but I am ok with that as it includes the weight of my winch.

I can hardly imagine my deuce without the HIAB...mounting it on a trailer is not practical IMHO.
If you intend to get one from Mr Rosen, be prepared to pay close to 10K for a used one.
For that price I will include a deuce and a full tank of fuel:D

Bjorn, in the past he has got some smaller ones in 6T/m (whatever that means) and he would sell them unrefurbished. I hope that might be the case again. I'm not opposed to buying a complete truck and taking the crane off either. Right now its just something I'm considering but I did manage to get a transfer PTO in a swap deal.

6t/m refers to lifting capacity; 6 tons one meter from the pedestal, 3 tons two meters from the pedestal, 1.5 tons four meters from the pedestal and so on.

Joel's is probably close to a 10t/m crane and mine is about 8t/m.

hiab knuckleboom model numbers identify the capacity of the boom. Mine is a 950 which is rated for 9.5 metric tons/meter.

so, at 1.9 meters I can lift 11000 lbs
{20943 lbs(9.5 metric tons)/1.9 meters = 11023 lbs}

At some point hiab updated there nomenclature and moved the decimel place one digit left, so a new hiab 99 is actually rated for higher loads than my 950.

Yes, the outriggers are by themselves very useful. I have never carried a jack in the deuce, for example. The hydraulic outriggers will easily lift the entire vehicle and by blocking the wheels, the headroom below it can be increased by a foot or more for working.
They have extracted my truck from clay with the front axle resting in it, piled stuff under the outrigger pads, got it up a little, piled rocks, branches etc under the lifted wheels and kept doing that until I could drive back out.
The center mounting of the crane is important for this to work.

Of course, the boom itself can be manipulated to change the CG on a side slope or for traction as needed, move it forward over the cab to compensate for an extended load, which may otherwise make it impossible to steer (truck tipping up).
The outriggers have been used to tip the truck sideways to help unload firewood (my example) and using the boom to rake it off.
The pipeline bed is a perfect companion. The M756A2 should have had this crane from day one instead of the A-frame, which is impossibly impractical.
Using the block anchor points in the bed, sideways winching becomes a breeze. Forward and rear winching is also possible with the crane plus snatch blocks.
As a safety device, it functions as an ROP when folded in figure 4 position behind the cab.

Mounting the crane at the end of the bed limits its usefulness in many ways (FMTV and HEMTT for example).

Like I said, can't hardly imagine the truck without the K-boom.

No doubt the uses are endless. I also like the idea of a pipeline bed but there were probably only 2 takeoff pipeline beds in the world. The one you have and the one some idiot gave Joel. I've given serious thought to the dump too. I even thought of hinging the bed and using the crane to lift in until the hydraulics could be sourced and installed. My thoughts in thinking ahead were to use my current dropside bed and chop it to 9'. That would keep the spacing in the side panels uniform and make for an easy cutdown of the soft top. I know that you and Joel only needed just over 2' of space for your booms but I was thinking of an additional box and spare in that "Extra" foot of space. Removable sides are a plus and the option to run troop seats, bows and a cover for camping just add to the possibilities. I'm trying to find data on the MK17 back half cranes to see how much they weigh too. Suppose I shoulda bought one when they were selling them.

Jim, I'm still pondering a price. I really want to get a working figure on purchasing a crane before I jump in on this. If a crane is going to cost me 10 large then the 108 will just have to be kept.

Kenny, another thought. With all the residue dumps being sold out of Albany, you should be able to pick up a complete dump kit from someone parting one out, pretty cheap.

Thanks Pete. I have a complete pump and control valve off of a deuce tipper too! Hey, any idea how much the crane weighs on your Frankentruck?

I will see if I can find a tag on it when I get back from Indiana.
I was thinking more along the lines of the cylinders, framework, etc. making it easier to mount a standard cargo bed to it. Also removing the cab protector, would allow space to mount a crane behind the cab, since a dump bed is shorter than the cargo bed.

By using the hydraulics and multiple use of controls, like switch outrigger controls to other functions after vehicle is leveled, an earth boring attachment can be used for example.

Jim, I'm still pondering a price. I really want to get a working figure on purchasing a crane before I jump in on this. If a crane is going to cost me 10 large then the 108 will just have to be kept.

Check out some salvage yards. Years ago I got a large boom just for the price of scrap. It just needed a little welding repair and I had a great boom for years.

You can find a knuckle boom cheaper but it only happens a few times ran across one it and truck was for $2,500, but it is
only rated a 6,000lbsi think it is rated more from the way it looks. still have the # if interested.
