Should I install a gear vendors overdrive

Check a thread on over drive gears by m-35tom he has produced a replacement 5th gear for the deuce along with a couple of other improvements for the stock tranny that will help with speed. I don't know if any one has tried the gears with tires that size yet .

Don't let these guy get to you the site really is a great source of information you just have play by their rules or get a good amount of grief
53's and the overdrive gear. You would have zero power and probably couldn't keep it in 5th unless you were going downhill. Have you ever tried to lift a mounted 53" tire?

I installed convoy lights so I felt safer by warning people I was going slower. My deuce really seems to like it around 48-52. When I get her rolling down the freeway, I'm in no hurry. Every place I'm going will wait until I get there. A lot of times I'll miss and exit or a turn on purpose to get a few more minutes of driving.

Just to add to the thread in a meaningful way, a different thing to take into consideration is that the tires would lower your breaking ability on their own just by being a greater diameter, then you have to consider that by removing an axle you are just taking about 800 pounds of gear off the truck and then also removing a third of the breaks available to stop.

Safety is key in this hobby by a long shot. Going at a highway speed is of little concern to those who drive these trucks almost everyday. Being able to stop in a hurry when one of the multitude of derps cuts you off or does something stupid is of great importance and an event that will repeat itself over and over in your travels.

I have no issue with putting modern equipment on the truck that would make it a more drivable vehicle, but removing safety features puts us all at risk and puts a shadow over the hobby as a whole.

I really hope this is a troll thread.

ouverson engeneering sells disc brake conversion kits for rockwell axles, granted they are set up for chevy 8 lug bolt patterns, but this right here will alleviate you some unsprung weight while increasing your braking potential. If you are going to "seriously upgrade" your deuce, this is what I would do, then go to a good set of rims and tires, and most importantly, just enjoy the drive.

ok, done. my truck will exceed those speeds originally posted and i'm running 1600's.

that said, the OP has a lot more to consider than just adding tires. i don't normally drive those speeds. heck, i don't even use the interstate just because i prefer to go for a drive rather than get somewhere fast, but can and have done so on the hi-way. so, back to your point: am i wrong for being able to do it?

Randy's kits are not suitable for a vehicle the weight of a deuce. ask Randy and he'll tell you that himself.

I would talk to "crazywelder" he is here in Mass. He has a M35A2 with 53's and it is still 6x6. I know he drives it everywhere. I believe it is for sale in the classifieds too.

I heard the same comments when I was putting 53's on my M813. Yes the tall tires suck the power out of the motor but I have run it at 70MPH. I can say that it is no fun though. I love my truck and run it at 65 mph at 1900rpm where it like it to be :) I drive my truck everywhere and being to keep highway speed is great. 60 or 65 is all you need. if you are going to run your truck that hard you will need to make lots of changes and have a good maintenance schedule.

53's are on with A3 wheels and custom inserts. One axle removed. Custom airbag suspension installed with 18" vertical travel (24" of travel when articulated). 4 link rear, & 3 link front. 4 swaybars. Crewcab installed. AC installed. Lockers installed front & rear. Front lockouts installed. Bed shortened 3 feet. Custom 60 gallon fuel tank inside frame. Batteries inside frame. Frame extended to accomidate 20K PTO winch. Winch has been rebuilt and ready to install with 300' 9/16 cable. Door handles are 6 to 7-1/2 feet from the ground depending on the airbag level. Timing advanced. Fuel turned up. Water injection installed. Truck weighs in just over 13,000 lbs dry without winch. The truck will easily go down the highway at 65 mph with no gearing modifications.

How is that for a FNG?

I'd love to see the fuel tank inside the frame rails. I have been wanting to do that mod on my truck(under bed, over chassis frame) for a few years now. Its too expensive to have one made though.

Gimp, there is a place down here in Ocala called Boyd's welding that have made several aluminum tanks for me fairly reasonable. Awesome welding too. Just a thought. I have thought about adding a tank there as well, to supplement the original. Need to do some measuring.

I'd love to see the fuel tank inside the frame rails. I have been wanting to do that mod on my truck(under bed, over chassis frame) for a few years now. Its too expensive to have one made though.
 
It's funny so many people chime in when a new guy ask how to make his truck faster when few have done it. Maybe we should suggest said new guy look up what the speed rating is on the tires he wants to use. Especially since most of the MIL-spec tires are only rated to 60 or 65. The M35 can be madw to safely travel the speeds he's listed but the expense is quite high. I completely understand the annoyance it must be to have the same questions asked over and over so why doesn't someone, say Mudgupp since he's done it, get a list of whats required and make it a sticky. That would solve most of your problems.

Experience suggests that most people asking such questions don't read the stickies in the first place. Just look at all the questions that are asked repeatedly that are already covered by the stickies. Look at the big banner at the top of the page that says not to post live auction / sales links. It seems many people want the fast, easy answer without doing the work themselves.

I agree with you. The sad truth is most people are lazy, stupid or both. It doesn't matter what hobby you enjoy that's just a terrible combination.

I honestly think the biggest limiting factor concerning speed for a M35 is gearing. Between the transmission and axle ratio the overall final gear is way to low. There's really no good econimical fix for the gearing.
