Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of a single 24v battery that would be enough to power the HMMWV? Just wondering if something that would fit exists?

I believe that some helicopters use 24V batteries the same size as 6T, or something similar. I remember someone talking about snagging one from their flight maintenance unit after it aged out or something like that. Perfectly good still, but in a multi million dollar helicopter you don't take chances like that.
The question is, why would you want to?
About the only thing that using a single 24V battery would change is completely screwing you over if something happened to it, as opposed to only halfway screwing you over if one of the 2 12V batteries decided to fail completely. You'd also lose any chance of using a 12V vehicle to jump start your rig in that situation.
Look at it this way, with the military's pretty much unlimited budget, if there was a 24V battery that was better suited to this job than a pair of 12V batteries, they'd have probably switched over to it long ago.

last time I saw an actual 24v battery was from a site that restocked batteries for varying type of planes/helicopters (especially separate category for extra-rugged 'safety battery') but otherwise pretty much everyone else pretty much serial-wire two 12v's or four 6v's together to get the 24v they wanted [especially for pre-lithium golfkarts too]

That would not work if you have a 4 speed or had a dual voltage system and wanted to tap off some 12V for accessories, both of these require 12V batteires.

I'm not quite sure anymore... but could it be that from the 4L80 onwards, 12V is also tapped somewhere in the battery box? Or at least the 12V cable from the front is also involved there?

12v is supplied from the primary battery, the one closest to the ground. It gets feed 12 to 14 volts from the voltage regulator. To keep both battery balanced. Feed off terminal is 12 to 15 volts with 50 amps.
