So I earned a deuce at auction... sort of, came with a tanker truck...

Looks to be a heck of a good buy for 4K! I would sure thing after you get the little things fixed you could make some good coin on this tanker. And as far as the air tanks in the back being dangerous, Dude your driving a TANKER, dont worry about the air tanks!
Yes, just the engine and tranny itself is quite valuable these days. I hear from the DNR that for 4-5k it can be converted into a fire rescue tanker, and they have all the plans and part numbers already on hand. Who knows, I might do it and contract it on a need rental basis.

One of the reasons the air tanks are in the rear is because they’re not convoy trucks. It’s been years ago but as I recall, these trucks weren’t allowed off base except for dire emergency. The only way they could get rear ended is by backing into something or possibly by have a jet fly up yer tookus.

But there she is in all her glory, at Luke AFB no less where she probably used to work (now she is for 4th July show) after this "DART mission" (downed Aircraft Recovery Team), except it was not a team but myself and not an aircraft but Surplus Military Automotive Recovery Team, as in SMART. Maybe make SMART a job or a club of old farts chasing old trucks in the world.

I finally decided to put a manual pull and lock/twist cable and ditching the electric Fuel SO solenoids I had tried. Something with the wires being too thin, heating up or a bad diode in the circuit causing high impedance and shut off of the valve. Did not feel like digging in button luxuries and did it the old Deuce Fashioned way instead.

With the heat in the summer the flat tire on the (mid outer) right axle side was inflated on the first try with ether and then air from the air tank (I fitted the air tank with a quick disconnect and drain valve for hosea) . (800 miles of driving it here tells me nothing melted or burned further in the tire either). In winter I had tried to no avail, it was to cold to have a wiz bang combustion to set the tire. I had butane but did not want to blow it up.

It seems to me that the brakes were leaky and some doofus could not move the truck. So instead of caging brakes or at least engaging the mid axle as it must have been dragging, they deflated one tire and drog the other INNER tire along the way BALD!

Simple application of brakes and a wiz noise told me brake cylinder was leaky and system not reliable. I managed to plug the lines with a thick piece of rubber from a discarded tire. It made a nice plug at the nipple. Then I caged the brake.

Now I just need to replace the tire, the brake upper cylinder, and fix a leaky fuel line hose and she is good to go. The cylinder is painted so thick I cannot read the spec on the cylinder. Someone here might know what type it is? I might just order one and a tire instead of having a truck stop charge me $300 for it. Brand seem to be MGM...

The DMV in California is so incompetent. Sheriff would not sign off a Vin check. CHP had a "specialist" for vin sign offs on vacation (wondered if it was Poncho or his buddy) and I had to wait 2 weeks. And when I called him he said I was 30 min away and too far for him, told me to talk to DMV.

DMV lady would not sign of the Florida vin certificate either but she did give me a One trip to Florida permit for $25. She told me I needed hazmat anyways to take it to her officer for a vin check. I said, no, because it is a purged non hired display surplus model. Whatever.


Is that even allowed for moving a vehicle interstate, this permit she gave me? Suffice to say Hagerty was nice enough to add this truck after State Farm lazy lady refused me again, this after her boss then later told her to insure my 72 deuce (still cannot figure why they wouldn't do the 72 Deuce without a car port... Too old?).

And so I was in my merry way from Chilcoot, CA to Phoenix, AZ (on my way to Florida - arriving there at the end of the month probably. I will do 1 day stretches weekend to weekend.)

Truck was very smooth, belches black smoke from a red light, coaling everyone, fun. When in cold weather it smokes white but no biggy, is normal I was told when in cold morning.

So, if any of you has a Het truck from govplanet ordered in Doyle, PulmasCounty storage will store it for you for $35 a month a bit more south off the highway in Chilcoot ( +15306161492 ) . I drove it cold the 20 miles down there with minimal maintenance so I could have time to go to Reno for fun and fixing the truck at the same time.

So I fell upon a spring brake chamber at NAPA for semis that fit my truck. Found out that the original brake was leaking because the douche installed the diaphragm backwards and it was making a sort of octagon instead of a disk as a result.

I still installed the new outfit despite the fact that once the diaphragm popped back in its right "cup direction" it seemed fine and the original part refit probably would have worked well.

I however installed one of the compressing rings ajar and it pushed the diaphragm's edge into the cylinder area. I applied the brakes and heard the same loud hiss and thought it was the whole system that was bad. After finagling trying to re-cage the brakes and pulling them i finally caught a glimpse of my mistake.

I reset the chamber in place and it worked!

As for the fuel leak, it was a tiny odd slit with a spray and the hose was good otherwise. My buddy told me I could temporarily put some black rtv around and wrap it with gorrilla tape and zip ties, and it actually worked.
