Speedometer Flutter

The speedometer on my 1097A2 flutters +/- 5mph at almost any speed range but the slowest. I have read up on disconnecting the cable in order to service. But may I get a confirmation that the attached pic shows the connection on the transmission?

That's the one. May need to be lubed up or a kinked up cable or stripped gear set or my final guess a bad speedo.

That's an super clean truck, Maybe work better if it was a bit more dirty, CAMO

Mine did that until I put on tires that were actually round and centramatics to balance everything.
Now it rides smooth enough that I'm slightly freaked out about it, and the speedometer is almost rock solid.

Centramatics and Balance Masters dynamically balance the wheels as you go down the road eliminating the need to have the tires balanced as they wear. I've run Balance Masters for almost 20 years and have never had tires balanced at a shop. All they are is a disc that mounts between the wheel and the hub that has some weighted material inside that repositions itself as you drive to effecively keep the wheels balanced. They're a bit pricey but well worth the investment in my opinion.

As for your speedometer instability, when I first got my truck the speedo was all over the place and then quit altogether. What I found was that the right angle coupling on the trans (TH400) was loose and that caused the flex cable in it to come apart and finally break. When I replaced it I also removed the speedometer cable and made sure it was clean and lubricated when it went back in. That took care of my issues. Now if you have an electronic speedometer your on your own..............

I love the centramatics. I can do everything for the wheels/tires at home without having to take it to a shop. Not to mention sometimes as tires wear the balance changes on them, and the centramatics can accommodate that.


The local shop (les schwab) says their tire balancer is rated for 150 lbs, and these with run flat are heavier than that. They also charge by the hour to deal with anything outside the normal.

For the cost of the centramatics I could pay for them to do 2-3 hours of work for me. At best that's a couple of tire changes.

Add to that someone has been selling brand new run flat compression tools on ebay for under $30 shipped. With the right tools changing the runflat isn't all that hard to do (I've even managed it with the wrong tools and lots of dish soap)

They can't fix out of round tires, or massively out of balance tires, but they will take care of most of the issues, are unobtrusive/out of the way, and the only actual downside is having to buy them.

My speedo was jumpy too, Bought a new cable ( they are cheep) , Found a rough spot in the 90 deg adapter (not so cheep) transfer case had the wrong gear in it so i installed a new 41 tooth gear AND installed a set of Centramatics. smooooth sailing now.

There is an adapter that screws into the end of the speeodmeter cable after it is disconnected and it has a zerk fitting. A few pumps of a grease gun and it will bring back a jerky cable if it is not cut or frayed. I think dorman or Help made it which I think are now the same company.

Info : 35 tooth orange gear...for 2.56 gear ratio
: 36 tooth red gear...for 2.73 gear ratio
: 41 tooth gear for 3.08 gear ratio
There are 2 types of speedo cables...Longer one is : 12338428-2

Then you need to look for the usual suspects...

Bad shocks, out of round tires, really bad alignment, inner tire vs. outer tire imbalance, mud on inner tires.... That's off the top of my head.

Simplest explanation for this occurrance would be the tires are out of round.
