Spring Seat Question

I am starting on the refurb of my driver seat and want to take it apart, blast it and repaint it. I am doing my interior in Rapco Semi-Gloss Olive Drab. In looking at the construction and springs, it seems like it could be a real nightmare trying to get it back together once the parts are refinished. Anyone done this before and have any advice.

Tinwoodsman, I am doing the same thing to my Deuce. I am going to use the
Semi-Gloss Olive Drab also.
I look at the seat and I think I am going to just try to paint it all together.

I think I would leave it all together clean and paint it.

They arent bad to paint all together, once the cushions are off you can clean and paint easily!

Thanks for the recommendations and suggestion to clean and paint. I wish that were true. Mine looks like a depository for excess CARC paint. Hopefully someone will have disassembly and assembly experience so I can thoroughly clean this puppy.

I am doing the same thing. Took the cushions off and the hit it with a wire wheel on my air tools. Helped a lot. Some areas I couldn't reach so cleaned up the best I could and painted over. I'm using flat OD for my interior and will desert tan the outside again when the cab is complete.

I would take the shock off then take it to a machine shop that has an acid tank,it will take that paint off.

Come on Kent, anyone capable of refurbishing his front winch should be able also to do that seat - blindfolded...

Don't leave things half-done! Sure enough you'll find some surface rust already present where it never saw any fresh paint. Also cleaning and re-lubricating the adjuster threaded rod plus all bushings will give you peace (of mind)
It really isn't complicated at all; no way to end with parts upside-down. Take a few pics just in case and look at the diagram below..... Or post more Qs....

That does it G. You have laid down the gauntlet. The only thing I do not see your attachment is the coil spring controlled by the adjusting arm. Either way, this puppy is coming apart and you come visit me in Texas if I get stumped.

Ive pulled one apart to clean it up after getting it out of a salvage yard. Its really not that hard. I dont remember any steps. All I remember is the hardest part was getting the last few bolts back into #27 while holding the seat down under tension from the spring.

#27 is in reference to the diagram posted by gringletaube

That was one of my concerns. I will just have to look for a fat person to sit on it while I wrench.

Don't know what your intentions are for recovering the cushions but I used new shelter halves (GP Tinys) that I had laying around.
My upholstry guy was pretty good at improvising.

Well, with G's. encouragement, I tackled the driver's seat and here is the result. Strangely enough, taking it apart was harder than reassembly due to the rust and mis-matched hardware. After a full cleaning, primer and paint I re-assembled the seat and re-upholstered the cushions (wrinkles still need to smooth out) and here it is. I feel so much better now.

You're missing the metal plate on the back for your lumbar adjustment. Or does every seat not have one of those?

The seat back has a curved arm that moves against the back of my seat which is a solid metal pan. Moving the lever raise the back up and down. If you have something different, I would like to see a picture.

All three of my spring seats have an additional thin metal plate on the outside of the upholstery that the curved bar sits against (to keep the fabric from wearing through, I'm assuming). If nobody else comes up with a pic, I'll try to get you one tomorrow (as it's dark now).
