816 wouldnt start and has been getting harder last few months. so after charging up all the batteries and still no turning over i looked at the starter. i can see some naked bad spot under the terminals. burnt and nasty. so do i just change out that solenoid or whole starter. were is a good source for said part. i have a spare starter if i just need to swap out the whole thing.

You do need to remove the starter to replace the solenoid correctly.

that sounds like a good plan. tomorrow ill swap the starter out and then take the old one apart. after all it might not be worth fixing it. once i open it up ill know more. my wrecker was not one of those that were just out of a rebuild shop. i picked it up in 03 with 79k miles on it. and it did not run when parked. haha. ill take a pic tomorrow and show my progress. thanks all

I would remove the starter. Fit the spare, then service the faulty one.
Second that idea, the solenoid is available on the web, the part number is on the solenoid mount flange. I've changed out several solenoids on 5 ton starters, best accomplished on the bench. BEWARE, the starter is one heavy son of a gun!
Gravity will help it out, watch your fingers being pinched between the frame rail and stater, installing may take soldier B to assist. I fashioned a sling to suspend it in place and start the top bolt first. Go for it..
