Which nobody else addressed. If he is having starter trouble and rapping it with a hammer gets the starter to work, then it is normally worn brushes. The hammer trick will only work so long, then there are no more brushes to vibrate into contact.
As far as I know, the starter has not a thing to do with the glow plugs, except the glow plugs are worthless in an automatic truck that has no starter. Might help you get rolling in a manual truck without a starter though. Glen
