STE/lCE tester- what do they do and do they exist anymore?

This is just out of curiosity, are there any of these things still around? If I just cut that port out of my harness would it hurt anything? I wouldn't mind keeping the port if I thought I could find a tester around somewhere. Has anyone ever seen one come up on GL?

They are a vehicle systems diagnostic tester. Yes, they are available. I know someone who sells them, can get you a price and phone # if you would like. He gave me a demonstration of one last year. Kinda interesting I suppose.

They're kinda hard to find, but they're still around. Never had any experience with it, but I had heard from a guy who was a USMC mechanic back in the day that half the time the equipment wouldn't tell you much more than the idiot lights would. And yes, you can pull the wiring and stuff out without screwing up the truck.

Simplified Testing Equipment/Internal Combustion Engine boxes are still out there. Find one with all the connectors and wires and adaptors. If it isn't all there, don't buy it. If you read the STE/ICE TM, you will be amazed at all it can test. RPM, actual numbers for fuel psi, oil psi, trans psi, engine temp, volts from each alternator, starter voltage drop, etc...

Compared to the OBDII stuff on all 1994 and newer US sold vehicles, it is a gadget. Still usefull though. Figure $300-$400 to collect individual tools, sensors to do the job this thing will do. Not really practical because those individual tools can be used on any vehicle while this thing is just for MV's.

I have one and here are the pics to prove it....
I haul it around in the back of the CUCV to amuse the "youngfolk" I try to explain to them that it's a 30 year old ODBII but most of the time I just BLANK stares.....

I am checking the charging voltage in this picture.... Could of done with multi-meter, but I had the STE/ICE .......
mine is complete ALL probes,adapters,wires,connectors....... I think I paid more to ship than I did to buy...
If you want to see it work come, to Steel Soldiers Rally in Bryan Texas 18 - 20 Nov. I'll have it there......

The test harness unplugs from the engine harness behind the air cleaner. But then you have exposed connections. If you cut test harness you have hot leads under dash. If for some reason the plug bothers you, you should just unbolt it and wire tie it under dash.

would read rpm from tacometer pulses. when I got a tac. for my cucv I calibrated it with a hand held digital unit sold on the bay it i optical you stick a small pice of reflective tape on anything you want to check and aim it Very handy and less than 35.00
as an army mechanic the ONLY time I used steice was in training.

There is an rpm circuit in the CUCV system. The signal comes from the alternators.

I am not sure if there is some kind of party trick we can do or not with 3 of them. Not sure I really want to find out either.

OK heres what you need for setting the RPM's with the STE-ICE you need the DCA Cable that goes from the plug under the dash to the VTM, set it too the #10 on the VTM, start the vehicle push the test button on the VTM and if everything is working correctly you will get your RPM reading its getting that from the Tach Wire on the driver side ALT. Very Cool, Scott O&O
P.S. The Info for the RPM settings are in the 20 Manual

Is there any type of installed electric tachometer that could utilize the pulses generated by the alternator for a read out? If there were that seems like a more simple option than magnetic tach that some folks install.

Can the diagnostic port be used to wire in more modern devices such as a tach or voltmeters since the wiring is already there? Or does the STE/ICE control some settings within the vehicle that would prevent more modern usage?

I am thinking of using the diag port as a power and signal port for an upgraded dashboard with modern indicators.
