Steering Gear Box Maintenance

I went to drain / fill my steering box with 80/90 gear oil and it appears to be full of a medium thickness gray grease. Should I leave the grease or flush it to add the proper gear oil or corn head grease? Anyway to determine what type of grease may have been used?

I've read that the lube in deuce steering boxes is often replaced with corn head grease, IIRC, especially because it's thicker and won't drain out of a leaky box. I've never used it myself, so, not sure how to tell if it's too contaminated/needs replacing, or how you'd go about flushing it out to replace it. Hopefully someone who's used corn head will chime in.
