Stuck in the mud by a factor of 10

So we had a lot of rain this weekend - actually used the truck to ford the waters as my son's air soft battle field was floating away (pallets and barrels). The truck was GREAT up to 2 feet of water. Little did I know I was playing with fire.

The next day, the waters went down significantly and I was able to see the main trail around my property by the creek. The rain gods had sent some fun new culvert material for the air soft field so we went to pluck from the creek.

Same trails as the day before but now just mud soup.

Got the truck STUCK. I mean STUCK STUCK. Hours later, a lot of jacking, shoveling, and creeping it one inch this way or that...it got out.

I forbid my son to snap any pictures! Now I wish we had. Had there been a which, I would have needed a mud anchor as there were no trees in the area to reach and NO way I was going to bring the Silverado close to that area.

The good news is - it came out without calling in air support. The bad news...the ruts in the field are bad. I'll need to fill those in this spring. Went to the car wash slinging mud and washed buckets of mud off!

My 15 year old kept saying "Dad...I didn't think these could get stuck!" LOL!

Were you using the BTM (Brake/torque modulation)? Will generally move a stuck vehicle (well up to a point) if used correctly. Now if you did, and you weer buried and still eventually got out, then that is a WIN!

Marsh mud is about the worst stuff you could ask for. You have to think twice about driving into any field here in Indiana because it might just be hiding silty mud under the vegetation.

I've gotten my car stuck on a hilltop here...it was paved all the way up, but as soon as I rolled into the grass at the top, the car just slid in and sunk to the frame. One generally doesn't have recovery gear in a FWD sedan, so I had to call a wrecker to pop me off of the hill. $100 sunk on that hill, but I was lucky enough to win $110 at the casino later on my second pull, so I called it a day and just kept it as a cool story.

Another time on my KLR 650, I was riding across an old bridge leading over to the edge of a field... Everything was solid at the landing, but when I was aiming to get back to the road, I sank instantly into mud that buried half my forks. It thankfully was thick enough that it held the bike upright, but I had to wait around for the riders behind me to catch up to help pull me out.

So...YES, I did the brake modulation. I'm not 100% sure I'm doing it right as I can't see all four tires at once. My son said I had all four moving. I've watched military videos on it - but since there is no light that goes on or anything else I'm not 100% sure I'm doing it right. Basically I've brought the speed up till it starts to spin, then pump down and ride the brake. I can see the two tires on the left turning together and away we go.

I technically got it stuck in two spots. The first spot the brake modulation and turning the tires left to right got some grab and it lifted up and started going. But, I think I blew it when I hesitated for a moment and attempted a 90 degree left turn to avoid getting any deeper along the creek. I headed into what looked like nice green area...but it was just marsh. The ground actually blew up and moved like water in slow motion.

My wife was looking out the window watching and called several times on the phone. I could hear it ringing but my hands and gloves were so covered in mud I couldn't answer anyway. She was in there trying to remind me to use the brake modulation...as she was looking up "ways to get a Humvee out of the mud" - when I came in she showed me that same article of the air lift!

I did the same thing this weekend but with a 6000lb kubota 4x4 tractor. Went to actually retrieve a culvert pipe that was mine. Ground looked great after water retreated back and felt firm under foot but about 8ft from the bank I sank right into saturated silt to the belly of the tractor. Luckily had a front end loader on, had to go get a bunch of 4' sections of tree trunks I cut down and stick them under the loader bucket as it just sank in too. Pushed off the trees to get the front wheels up, put branches under those, pushed back with the diff lock on, re position and repeat 3X until I was out. Not fun!

I have hunted in Montana quit a bit and I can just see it a load of newbs in a vehicle that CANT GET STUCK, this was doomed the second they started the engine! The soil in a lot of Montana is like deep grease when it gets really wet. I was antelope hunting one time and it was raining most of the day and I shot my antelope that morning and it started so I crawled in the back of my pickup (it had a topper) and slept till morning. I had finally stopped raining and in driving out it was just as tricky as I expected but really surprised me was when I got out to the main gravel road and took my pickup out of 4 wd while cruising 35 mph is the pickup started slowing down just about immediately, I had to be in 4 wd to drive on the MAIN road! Yep these guys were screwed before they even started!

I was out in the field last night and thought about taking pics of the ground. It tells the story.

Perhaps i will. There is still cardboard and 2x8 planks embedded in the mud.

I have a farmer friend who has some property where we've set up a shooting range. Occasionally he and other friends will get their 4x4 pickups stuck in the deep gullies that form after rains. I've always been able to get them out using the HMMWV using BTM. But I've thought about WWII fighter planes and the little Japanese flags they used to show kills. I'm thinking of putting a blue oval/bowtie on the side of the HMMWV for each recovered truck.

So I thought I would read up the 'regulation'.
Now. I consider myself well educated, However,
I could make absolutely nothing of the unintelligible gobbledegook official; speak whatsoever.

We have the same problem here in Germany. Its going to get worse, when this stupid new EU law gets passed. EVERYTHING will pass through a filter, before going into the net.

Perhaps you should consider scrapping the bowties and blue ovals in favor of little pink and blue skirts. LOL
