Surge Brakes M416

Hey Folks, new guy here looking at a '67 Stevens m416 here locally. 1st question is, what year did surge brakes start on m416's. 2. I have this on hold until I can get there Saturday, but aside from surface rust it appears in pretty darn good shape (considering), what should I look for in person before I hand over $750 and haul it home?

it looks like the M416A1 had the surge brakes (I checked the TM for that), and if the internet is to believed then they started production in 1978.
The regular M416 (not the A1 version) just has the parking brake.

It should be pretty obvious looking at the trailer tongue whether it has surge brakes or not, the surge unit is pretty big.

From all ads I've seen in recent time, that price is a steal compared to what some guys are asking.

My m1101 has surge and I drilled/put in a pin for a lockout and backup safety. IF it has surge brakes, you may want to consider the mod.

It really is amazing how that lockout pin can be ignored.

Until you have a few hundred pounds (maybe even nothing) in the trailer -- and you try to back up a small incline -- and the brakes lock and you are stuck. Without that lockout pin, about all you can do is say a string of 4 letter words...

From all ads I've seen in recent time, that price is a steal compared to what some guys are asking.
I just picked one up from the Forestry service on GSA sales for $118. Pintel ring and landing leg were cut off (attachments still there), Tail lights replaced and the tub was left with water in it for a long period but it's still towable and not bad otherwise. Data plates are missing also.

$750 is an excellent price, even more so for an A1 with a surge brake. A1s are fairly scarce.

I picked up a M416 last weekend that was in better condition than the one I already had and paid much less for it. Both M416s had original tires, but still held air so I went ahead with the tow. Towed one M416 more than two hours behind my 2500, no issues. The other was less than an hour with no issues. Consider wheels, brakes, bearings and lights on your trailer if you have a long tow home. Although none of this is a huge deal on such a small trailer, I just never want to be the guy that causes an accident or ends up stuck on the side of the road due to my failure to plan.

Take a jack (or a buddy to lift the trailer) lift each wheel off the ground to make sure the wheels spin freely; the parking brakes can be stuck and you can get a feel for condition of the bearings. I’m glad I checked, one side was rusted in place and I couldn’t tell by the handle since the pull cable was cut. Check lug nuts too. One wheel was loose, and two nuts were missing on mine, I put on some spares. If the wiring harness is complete you can use a mil to civ trailer plug adapter and swap 12v bulbs into the lights. Or you can use magnetic tow lights if you have a set. I took along a spare set of wheels and tires, didn’t need them but I had those on hand already. Not much more to it.

Mine was definitely a steal. Not many looking at the GSA site this week I guess.
I have a double axle trailer I pull if I don't know just what I'm getting. This time I was picking up the trailer and an HDT 307 tent. Thanks for the advice on what to look for.
