The reason why many combat/bolt together wheels fail when running a tub comes from the fact that the hole in the wheel and stem of the tire dont line up very well. It normally causes a small tear next to the stem on the tube lowering the air pressure as you run them. Spinning tires,lower air pressure and loads make it worse. Speed weight and distance determine if that tire will last. Imo id run them tubeless for lots of reasons with that wheel.

This is why you don't want to run tubes in 5 ton combat wheels.

Does anyone use any type of rubber protectant to help the deterioration (UV) on better condition tires?

If in long term storage, consider jacking the truck up and setting on jack stands, again, just like the RV folks do. Less work would be to at least separate the tire from the concrete/asphalt with some wood slats.

Lets bring it back with some updated information.

The XL tires will show cracks all the time. Regardless. You have to realize now that they are 15 years old or older. Get them off your trucks sooner rather than later.

Yes all tires dry rot. and show fatigue. However lets test that versus being used.

Below is a picture of a 16.00R20 Goodyear AT3 - These are front steer tires at the moment. - 40,000 miles or so on them. 2016 date code on the passengers side and a 2017 date code on the drivers side. Cracking between the lugs and it also pushing the rubber up in some places.

These tires were warehouse stored before I put them on because they came from a warehouse when I picked them up and were unmounted. SO....... Yeah. Stress cracking? dry rot? Who knows. Goodyear warranties their tires for 4 yrs regardless of purchase for dry rot. Tires are still sitting at about 40 percent tread.

IF you have no idea..Then DO NOT drive ANY vehicle with ANY Damaged tires.
But know this, there is a stamp on tires so marked 'NO tubes' for a very good reason.
The construction of tubeless tires usually incorporates ridges in the construction, Which do an excellent job of wearing through an inner tube!.
For your safety, and your kin, The place to seek advice Is your nearest TIRE SHOP.
Or, Testing station.
You can never be 'Too busy' to be...Safe.
Sorry to rant on, But if you have other issues of understanding your vehicle (s), Download and check through the relevant T.M.s, Take the time to read them, And especially items pertaining to safety AND THE CHECKS. As in the very readable and interesting P.S. Magazine.
