Tow dolly idea??

As some of you know.....I have been wanting a tow dolly. SO....what do you think about this.....

Cut a deuce in half & mount a 5th wheel between the 2 rear axles & make a custom tow dolly. It would have air/hydraulic brakes & lights. And would have a very large capacity (much more than a converted M200A1).

Here is a pic of what it would be similar to.....

Isn't the M200 also 2.5 tons? What would you gain but towing alot of extra weight?

why kill a deuce to make the dolly why not just remove the bed and put the 5th wheel on and make you a tractor instead of the M200 then?

WAIT!!!!! are you wanting a dolly since a dolly and winch can get stuff out of your yard when your stuck. And you dont wanta get a 818 stuck again

I don't see how that would work. At least, not with the stock suspension and if the frame/tongue are configured anything like the pics you attached. Just think about how the rear suspension on a Deuce works.

Look at comercial dollies to get your ideas. I do not think that four wheels will turn right.

There already are dollies like that, that were military issue. There was a single-axle M198 which was rated at 8 tons, and the dual-axle M199 that was rated at 18 tons. Both were very rugged. You might want to seek one of these out.

i agree that a deuce would not be a good donor for a dolly because of the walking beam suspension - when unloaded, the dolly will pitch forward or rearward. the ont in your picture basically has two sets of springs - one for each dolly axle. this would keep your dolly manageable when unloaded.

it would probably be easiest and most cost effective to get a back-half frame and 5th wheel assy from a tractor and install two trailer axles under it. then just fab a pivoting tongue.

You could always get this from Clark Equipment. Two axles, built on the rear end of a M123A1C ten-ton truck. Cool price of $3750.
