Transfer questions....

I have been given fairly large amounts of WMO in the past couple days....and am wondering what is the best way to get it from the auto repair shops to my house.

I bought a ROUND 275 gallon tank on skids and can put that on my trailer & go from shop to shop filling it up......but what is the best way to get it from the shops tanks to my tank?

I.E. --- A hand crank pump can process 8 gal/min @ 90 revs/min.....that will take a long time to transfer just the one shops 275 gallon tank they just told me to take.

I have 3 small water pumps that I got for free.....would they work? It says water only....but is that true?

I think you will need to "prime" the pump that you have, for it to work. It looks like a centrifugal pump. Maybe you could add a foot-valve to the suction side and prime it once, then you could carry it around and not need to prime it every time. It should pump used motor oil.

I have been using a pump like this one, but the one I have is a 110VAC pump http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=9576 . It has been working well. I use a piece of "cheap, hard" garden hose for my suction side and it is only 6' long(no trouble with it collapsing). I have about a 20' piece on the discharge side. It has been working well for me.

If you’re going to be pumping / collecting a significant amount of oil, you may want to go with something like this:

I am also using the oil to heat the barn in a waste oil heater. In Ohio, I will go through about 500 gallons just for that.

I am going to be ordering this pump and hooking it up to an electric start Vtwin mower engine that I took out of service.

At roughly 24 GPM, you’re not going to spend a lot of time waiting for the oil to transfer.

As far as collecting, I have a 275 gallon HHO tank that lays flat in the bed of the M35.

I looked at an air operated pump, but at the GPM rating on them, I would be running the pump off the M35 compressor for a long time to power it.

It comes down to how much oil you’re going to need. How much time you want to spend at the collection point, and what the people at the collection point are willing to put up with.

Consider all the factors, what may be on the cheap, may cost you in terms of hassle, time, and money to upgrade afterwards anyway.

This gets me in and out quick... in theory anyway.

If everything works according to plan, I will be collecting 275 gal at a shot, remember, you have to transfer it twice, keep that in mind when you’re selecting your components. Collection point to the truck, truck to the home storage tanks.

Also, check your state regulations, they may only allow you to keep XXXX amounts of oil at your residence, they usually frown at underground tanks. In Ohio, I think it's just under 500 gal your allowed to keep. The other thing is if you spill it, you own it .... $$ for cleanup.

Something else to consider, transporting WMO falls into hazardous waste transportation in most states. Check yours. Don’t draw attention to yourself. A trailer with a tank on it may draw attention. A bunch of 55 gallon drums in the back of a M35 may do the same. Companies who collect the oil for a business are all DOT approved.

Just some additional thoughts to consider as I too am working my way through this.
