should be motor oil. Pull the stick and take a look, but all the large auto in my motor pool we add 15/40 or 10W.. whatever we have around. but its NOT ATF!

While Uncle Sam ordered that the Allison automatic transmissions be capeable of being run on motor oil, if you talk with an Allison dealer, Allison strongly recommends their synthetic transmission fluid.

Motor oil does not have the same lubrication properties on the friction materials as does ATF.

If you do a search of this site for DMA251, Dameon details his restoration of the Hemtt and the Allison rebuild. The Allison dealer would not warranty the transmisson if motor oil was used in the transmission.

FYI, the military does that to keep the "number of needed different types of oils on the shelf" as low as possible. For people like us, I'd suggest putting in what the component manufacturer recommends, even if it goes against the TM, AFTER careful research.

15w-40....unless you are rebuilding the trans like I am.I am going to purge the cooler and lines and use ATF.The 16 speed cat transmissions in the M915's use 15w-40 too.
