Transmission issue

Hello all, well I am facing an issue with the transmission on my deuce. It is stuck in between two gears. The forks were misaligned in the tower and that has been fixed. But now I don't know how to get it out of those two gears and I am afraid I'll break a gear if I try to pry on it. Have any of you had this issue and if so how did you fix it? Years ago I had the gear lever get stuck between gears. And that was in the middle of a junction! We popped of the top and prized the gears into (what looked like) alignment, put the top on and off we went again. You can use a fair sized (and therefore blunt) tire lever or such, (that won't break and drop a tip into the works, to prize the gears into position. Obviously be firm if required, not brutal. It is not a hard task to do. (unless of course something is broken or really jammed)

Yup, that is exactly what happened to me. So you were able to pry them without breaking the gears? That is what worries me.

Make sure there is no tension on the driveline. I always jack up the tandem on one side to insure there is no bind then pop it loose. Several times I've been able to shake them loose with the shifter as long as the driveline bind is removed.

Okay good deal. Yeah after reading another forum I did try to jack up the rear and shake it lose with the shifter but it didn't work. Probably because the tower was bound up as well. Fixed that today. Should I put some aluminum or something between the tool I use to pry and the gear to kind of cushion the gear?

Yes. Or depress the clutch, once.

The picture shows the transmission in 4th- AND 3rd-gear, simultaneously. You should be able to pull both clutch collars out of gear without any tools, just by force of your hands/fingers. (It takes less effort to pull out of gear, than to put into gear, but both can be done by hand.)

With the T-case in neutral, turn the mainshaft over to confirm that the transmission is in neutral, also. Then put the top back in place.

I had this issue with a toole depot rebuilt transmission that I suspect had something dropped on the top and it jammed a couple gears in place. I took the top off as you had done and couldnt get anything to budge with my prying and rubber mallet and I didnt want to get any more forcefull with it. I ended up loosening the rear bearing cap (cant remember exactly what I did) but I took a few bolts out of the bearing cap on the back of the housing that holds the main shaft. Once I loosed that end up, it gave just enough clearance that I could slide a syncro or something back to where it should be and then all was good.

The last one I freed up for a friend was sitting in his driveway on an incline. I had to pull my truck up to his to relieve the weight of the truck off the gears. Once that happened, it was easy.

Thank you for the info! I tried moving with my hands and they would not budge. Then again the transfer case was in gear so maybe if I put that into neutral it will work.

Cool! So I am new to working on transmissions, so pardon my ignorance, but the bearing cap will be located at the rear of the transmission right by the driveshaft?

If you just put the transfer-case in neutral you will have no bind-up from the differentials. What is usually still holding them is the shifter collar is "twisted" and it will take a bit of force to move it. You can take a brass drift and a good size hammer and give it a good "wack" to move it back. When their bond-up like this they will not move by hand I can assure you.

I've had to use two pry bars 36" long and push hard on them to get those stupid collars loose ! So use your best judgment but just know that it will take some force to move it. Also since there are two collars that are stuck you only have to get one unstuck usually to free up everything, so I would try the 2-3 shift collar as it is easier to access.

Well, it came lose but broke teeth in the process? Does anyone know where I can get a good price on a used transmission?

There is also a 3052 which is a direct drive. They look the same. Odds of finding a 3052 are much smaller than a 3053A.

Isnt $400 a lot for a used take out transmission, or is that about what they go for most places? They are about $200 around here but maybe its a supply & demand thing?
