Mine is falling apart and I'm sure the reason for my late shifts...

Can this be removed and plumbed directly to the regulator?

Mine dry rotted, leaked and I removed it. Just hook the lines up directly and it will work fine.

The piece you have circled is the vacuum flux equalizer. Without this piece all will go well until something else flux up. That piece was basically put there to make assembly a breeze. It only fit the modulator one way and eliminated errors at the point of assembly. Not needed unless you are a perfectionist. Top line to transmission and bottom to back of engine. Pretty easy to remember. Have a Great Day.

Bypassed the adaptor and went straight to connectors.

Hoses were rotted... all of them. Replaced them, about $6 at O'Reilly.

Now it shifts around 25 and 35 and is so soft you almost can't feel it
..
