Hello all, so in October I purchased a 966 or atleast it's titled that way here in ohio.
22000 miles on it. Titled as 1988, but engine states 1990 gm, and the plate says in service/delivered via sometime in 94.

It wasn't running well when I purchased and had to drop quite a bit to get it to a good point where I'm pretty comfortable knowing that I've replaced key parts and it's not going to be something that is just problems. Been there, and it's no fun.

Anyway, I've put on all new 37 inch tires from cs army supply in Alabama. LED HEADLIGHTS, LIGHT BAR KIT, NEW 60 AMP ALT. NEW POWER STEERING GEARBOX, NEW GLOW PLUGS, REPLACED RUBBER FUEL LINES, NEW POWER STEERING AND ALTERNATOR BELTS, REPLACED DIFFERENTIAL SEALS IN FRONT AND BACK, BRAKE PADS ARE LOOKING ABOUT 75%. RHINO LINED EXTERIOR, GROUNDING HARNESS, NEW AIR FILTER, 3 OIL CHANGES JUST TO GET THE GOOD STUFF THROUGHOUT SYSTEM, MULTIPLE FLUSHES TO GET RID OF DISCOLORATION DUE TO CORROSSION. INJECTORS ARE GOOD AND TESTED.NEW SEALS APPLIED.
STARTS RIGHT UP. VERY LITTLE SMOKE AND CLEARS AFTER A MINUTE OR SO ON VERY COLD START.
FUEL PUMP IS GOOD. INJECTOR PUMP IS GOOD. PCB IS GOOD. AND LIGHTS ARE FUNCTIONAL. HEATER WORKS, AND DOES MAINTAIN A TEMP OF 180 IDLING WITH OIL PRESSURE AT 30 TO 40. 40 WHILE DRIVING. AND I THINK IVE HEARD FAN COME ON MAYBE 3 OR 4 TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF TIME SINCE PURCHASE. It comes with a street legal on road title for ohio.

IM ONLY ASKING BECAUSE I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE OTHER OWNERS OPINIONS.20211206_124318.jpg

I would assume that 30% is an opinion? I sell a truck a month or so and rhino lined trucks dont sell for any cheaper than non-rhino lined trucks I’ve found.

I will say this rhetorically because of course you have tried...

Have you ever tried to clean that crap off of a vehicle? That vehicle has been permanently changed with the rhino liner. There is no way to return it to a more authentic state without investing at least 100 hours to remove that sh!4.

That also means that the body parts cannot be sold for the same value. Mechanically I’m sure the truck is fine, however my buddies and I will never buy a truck with rhino liner unless the rhino liner is confined to the pick-up bed.

I know better than to argue with you Steve regarding vehicle value because this is what you do for a living and you are terrific at what you do. However, I would much prefer a vehicle painted in CARC or Behr paint. So too with my friends and associates.

(I will say I’m surprised with your answer only because you seem to prefer OEM everything.)

That translates into the fact that I would never bid on a vehicle like this. If it was given to me, I would struggle through, however I would not go out of my way to purchase said vehicle.

I still believe that this is not the place for this attempt at advertisement, and I believe the post is better removed and placed on the classifieds.

That's not saying much on the value assessment. I appreciate the constructive criticism though more or less.

Additionally, let's say I did add banks turbo(4-5k) and doors(another 3 to 5k) good seats($roughly 700 to 1k) is it really worth dropping the cash for these items? I only ask because financially in a position to do so but I don't want to get so heavy in this that I just take a beating

Dude, these are FMV former military vehicles that for many (but not all ) of us are luxury items, and the sky is the limit (unless your LE or FD). You need to enjoy your purchase, even if it is a daily driver. You spend what you want not based necessarily on value, but more based on preference.

If you want a hard top and hard doors and a turbo, go for it. It will be fun. This is not a portfolio investment.

What is YOUR vision for an enjoyable ownership experience?

IMHO I would pop in a four speed tranny before I did anything.

I get requests all the time in the shop to Raptor line, LizardSkin etc on trucks, it’s whatever the customer wants, my preference isn’t important, it’s what the end user ultimately wants the truck to look like.
The gentleman was only trying to get a valuation, not list the truck for sale in the wrong venue.
But just like a for sale item I’m not interested in buying or is way to expensive, I just scroll on.

Thanks man. My mechanic suggested the same. I've priced engines from Eastern surplus but they were beyond sketchy to deal with. Showed pics of a 6.5 with turbo on pallet, called rep to ask for pics of serial numbers on parts to make sure of matching sequences and a video of it running. They would only send me video after purchase and online it said buy it now but after I called they wanted wire transfer. And that's only one company I dealt with when looking to swap engines but the experience didn't sit well and alot of these surplus equipment dealers have extremely high prices. Can't hate em as it supply vs demand but gd.

If your engine is good, you need to scroll down and look at some of the site supporters. There is a guy who makes turbo units for our motors that do not require purchase from a company with a used motor. You just add the turbo unit to your engine and keep driving.

The other alternative is to place a Whipple supercharger. I have a spare one but that is not for sale. My point is they are out there and they are available.

It is probably however easier to just place the turbo unit as sold by one of the site sponsors. I am strongly considering selling my Whipple supercharger in order to purchase the turbo charger on sale from the site vendor here on Steel Soldiers Forum



As far as hard top options, don’t forget that you don’t need to go factory. There’s plenty of stuff on the company site for “Plan B trucks” that will absolutely fit your vehicle. The stuff is made out of Aluminum so it won’t rust. You can also buy OEM Aluminum tops and OEM X doors, however those things get pricey.

I have aftermarket doors for my truck that look like X doors. I will be removing my factory X doors and later rebuilding them for use perhaps on the next truck that I purchase. My aftermarket doors are electrified for power windows and locks.

I am considering buying a second truck and then upgrading with Plan B parts and the same turbo charger that I mentioned above, or I will buy a vehicle that is already turbo charged that is otherwise bare-bones for me to add Plan B Aluminum top and doors and such.

Well since you asked for my .02 worth here it is.
There are basically two groups of people into these trucks.
Those that want to keep them as close to original and those that don't care.

Both groups have people on a budget and people with deep pockets or that work in the fabrication business.
Most of the new owners are going to fall into the latter group.

You need to figure out what group you're planning on trying to market your truck too eventually.

I have to ask why you bought yours and why you're thinking on selling it?

They aren't for everyone that's for sure.
Some find that maintenance and parts availability are more than they expected.
Some find that licensing and registration become a problem.
Some find that storing them out of the weather or inside for either insurance reasons or HOA requirements becomes a problem.

So, to a potential buyer of your truck who wants to keep it original yours has allot going against it.
The plus is you have it licensed and plated for the street in Ohio that's about it.

To a potential buyer that's going to customize one you're now competing for what it will cost him at auction for a good rolling chassis.
Again, the thing yours has going for it is that it's plated for the street in Ohio.

Any money you put into it from now on is going to be used to market it too the guy that has deep pockets or is a fabricator or modification guy.
it's my opinion that they are going to want to build, design, modify the truck themselves so any money you spend on it is basically the some of the parts you put onto it and then a fraction of what you spent on them because the potential new owner is going to remove them and try and sell them.

Before you put another dime into it.

Get out a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle.
Pros on one side Cons on the other.
Which type buyer you want to sell too?
Why would they want your truck over any other one?

Which one did you buy? Which one you trying to sell?

Your truck has the old 8 bolt wheels, they are not considered safe, if you are not going to replace the engine and transmission the transmission should be first

I tend to agree with BLK, you should probably not be doing upgrades if you only plan on selling it, the upgrades will probably cost more than the gain in re-sale value especially if you count your own time involved, if it runs and drives it will sell.

Going to sell and go for civilian alpha. I do travel for defense industry from time to time and need some luxuries and capabilities i.e hwy speeds, power, etc etc. Plus I do know that shouldn't have a real hard time flipping that after some time.

I would never buy a bed lined truck personally, unless it was linex on the inside floor and not the dash. I really like how your truck looks and I think it will get a lot of attention. I would remove that small lightbar and get some 24 bolt wheels like was suggested earlier or 12 bolt. I like that the inside is not coated. Everyone that gets one wants to put their own stuff on it and you have a great starting point. Any upgrades will only raise the price and you won’t get your money back from it unless you get the parts for 1/2 price. 4 speed transmission would be the best upgrade but I don’t think it would matter as much to someone that just wants in. I have a friend that wants to buy one and he sends me ads to look over and they are all 3speeds and I tell him that it will be miserable for what he wants to use it for. He probably would have bought one without my input. I don’t know your price point but 18k is used RZR money and I believe most people would probably spend close to that for a licensed Humvee. When I’m building mine I use the 29k threshold for value. New turbo Rzr is that much or more and a Humvee with x-doors and hard top should bring that to the right person. I don’t care about making money but I would like to get it back when I’m done. Few years from now when auction supplies dry up what will it be worth? People on forums are mostly cheap when it comes to cost and I believe that’s because they know what stuff did cost but it’s different now and it will continue to get worse and oem stuff dries up. I’m new to this and people here have forgotten more than I will ever know. I have friends ask me what I have in it and when I tell them they all want one.

Probably be cheaper to get a regular H1 and have it swapped and be way ahead. You get a better Duramax and 6 speed Alison. I might be a little off on that but there is a big advantage to doing it. Sell old drive train to recoup some money. If I ever get an H1 that’s the way I would go. Buy one with a bad engine at a big discount or lots of miles.
